Lilybel Althaus Obituary

LAROSE - Lilybel Althaus, 93, of LaRose passed away at 8:20 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, at ASTA Care Center, Toluca.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 22, 2015, at Trinity Lutheran Church, LaRose, with the Rev. Mark Gruden officiating. Burial will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, LaRose. Visitation will be for one hour prior to services Sunday at the church.

Calvert-Johnson & Froelich Memorial Home in Toluca is assisting the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Cemetery Fund.

She was born March 16, 1921, in Elmore, Ill., the daughter of William and Gladys (Piper) Stodgel. She married George H. Althaus on June 16, 1946, at Trinity Lutheran Church in LaRose. They were married for 65 years. He preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 2011.

Surviving are two sons, David G. (Mary) Althaus of St. Louis and Jon (Lara) Althaus of Mattoon; two daughters, Nancy (Paul) Haugens of Naperville and Diane (Steve) Myers of Granbury, Texas; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (T.J.) Rodebaugh, Dan Althaus, Jonathan Haugens, Joran Haugens, Nathan Myers, Johnie Myers and Emily Althaus; and four great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Madeline Heschong.

Lilybel was a graduate of LaRose High School, class of 1939. She attended Illinois State University, receiving a teaching certificate. She taught at LaRose Grade School until 1948. After leaving teaching, she was involved with her husband in grain and livestock farming. Together, they both were dedicated to 4-H. They also enjoyed the Marshall-Putnam County Fair, the Illinois State Fair, and all the activities associated with the Chester White Swine Association.

She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church of LaRose and its Ladies Aid Society.

Lilybel enjoyed spending time with her family and friends from the LaRose area.

She enjoyed sewing and quilting, six handed euchre, living on the farm, basketball, U of I athletics and animals, especially their Shepherd mix, Molly.

She was a loving and devoted wife and mother.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Lilybel & George were gracious hosts to my sister, Mother, & me when we visited George & Helen Sperry's gravesite. My Mom, Agnes, was Helen's cousin & helped to care for her & George.
