Georgia Ruth Wood was born August 9, 1931, in Mangum, OK, to Viola and Fred McKenzie and died March 13, 2010, in Portales. When Mrs. Wood was six months old, the family moved to the Floyd community. They moved to Portales in 1937, and this remained her home for the rest of her life. Georgia Ruth graduated 3rd in her class from Portales High School in 1950, with plans to study business at Eastern New Mexico University. However, she decided instead to marry F. F. "Woody" Wood. The couple was married May 21, 1950. She attended Eastern for a short time, but never completed her degree. That was never a disappointment to her, as she loved her profession of wife and mother, and eventually grandmother and even great-grandmother.
Mrs. Wood enjoyed crocheting afghans and baby blankets for her family, as well as painting, and collecting recipes and cooking. Even above her love for her family, was her love for God, and his Word. Through the years, she had memorized large passages of scripture which she put into practice every day. Her vocation was to live a Godly, faithful and faith-filled life as an example to everyone who knew her. She was a member of the Southside Church of Christ.
Mrs. Wood is survived by F. F. "Woody" Wood, her husband of almost 60 years of Portales; two sons and a daughter-in-law, George Wood of Amarillo and Jimmy and Terry Wood of Ruidoso; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Barry Dictson of Beaverton, OR, and Elizabeth and Rod Self of Portales; her nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Will McKenzie of Albuquerque.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred McKenzie in 1976 and Viola McKenzie in 1996.
Arrangements by Wheeler Mortuary, 575-356-4455.

I was looking for contact info for Mary online, and was surprised and saddened to find this in my search instead. I hope that Mary will read this and receive my love and condolences.

Family: It was so good to see each one of you at the funeral. It seems like yesterday that we played in a sand box and had pretend weddings and long summer days to play. Your Mother was always so sweet. Remember riding to school in the mornings and we would try to hurry her up, Her favorite saying was "Better to get there slow than not get there at all." We all had some precious memories. Love Sandi [email protected]
