Age 88, a lifelong resident of Gary, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2016 in Portage, Indiana. Graduate Roosevelt High School 1945. Member of New Mt. Moriah Church. Retired employee of Lake County Recorder's office. Dedicated over 50 years of her life to local and state politics as a servant and advocate for the people of Northwest Indiana. Preceded in death by parents Annie Bell and Verse P. Sanders, husbands Johnny Elkins, Bernie Nickens, sons, John, George and Vernon L. Elkins, grandson Vernon P. Elkins and 10 siblings. Survivors: daughters Patricia (Stanley) Horvath of Porter, Indiana, Valda Elkins Butt of Joliet, Illinois, Anna Ballard of Gary, Indiana; son Garthell (Gail) Elkins of LaPorte, Indiana; 7 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; brother Verse (Mary) Sanders of Crown Point, Indiana; sisters Annie Bell Stubblefield of Portage, Indiana, Loris (James) Smith of Camden, Mississippi and a host of nieces, nephews other family and friends.Visitation Sunday, September 18, 2016, from 12noon -8:00p.m. with family hours from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Guy & Allen Chapel 2959 West 11th Avenue. Funeral services Monday, September 19, 2016, 11:00 a.m. at New Mt. Moriah Church, 1917 Carolina St., Gary. Rev. W.N. Reed, officiating. Interment Evergreen Memorial Park.
