John Lewers

John W. Lewers, the first African American Postmaster of East Chicago, was born in Coldwater, Mississippi and moved to Gary with his parents as part of the Great Migration. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1949. He attended Indiana University and pledged Omega Psi Phi becoming a lifetime member. He served his country as a U.S. Navy/Marine Hospital Corpsman in the Korean War. John began his career as a clerk in the U.S. Postal Service, retiring as Postmaster. John's passions were leadership duties as a free mason, volunteering, and time with family. He leaves behind his wife, three children, and six grandchildren.
