Ruth Evelyn Harris Hedrick, born May 3, 1925, Villa Ridge, IL, was the fifth of 12 children born to Samuel D. and Ida Belle Harris. At home, surrounded by loving family, she exchanged her earthly life for eternal peace on May 31, 2016. Early on Ruth accepted Christ, joining St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Mounds, IL. She graduated from Love Joy High, Mound City, IL. Ruth completed Nurse's Training School at Homer G. Phillips Hospital, St. Louis, MO, where she met and married Dr. James T. Hedrick, Jr. To this union eight children were born. Gary, IN became their home and First A.M.E. their church in the early '50's. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and five siblings: Mabel L. Meeks, George Dewey Harris, Hazel V. Young, Elmer "Sonny" Harris, and Thelma "June" Morgan. Ruth leaves to cherish her memory: children, James (Mazie) Hedrick, III, Merrillville, IN; Sandra H. Harp, Gary, IN; Jacolyn Fields, Aurora, CO; Drs. Winthrop (Guadalupe) Hedrick, Sr., Windsor, CA; Rhonda Hedrick, Gary, IN; Judith (Aaron) Kyle, Matthews, NC; Iris (Byron) Rogers, Sr., and Tracey (Carlton) Hoyles, both of Merrillville, IN; 5 sisters Lillian "Tillie" Davis, Mariejo Bradford, Bobbie (Robert) Taylor Sr., Joyce Hayes, Martha Ann (John) Lambert; brother Ronald Harris; sister-in-law Alma Harris,18 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, special nephew and niece, Roger K. Young, St. Paul, MN and Tammi S. Young, Daytona Beach, FL, and a host of other family and friends. Visitation: Friday, June 10, 2016, 12 - 8 p.m. (Family Hour 6 - 8). Funeral: Saturday, June 11, 2016, 11:00 a.m. Both services: First A.M.E. Church, 2045 Massachusetts Street, Gary, IN 46407.

Dr Hedrick, I just wanted to extend my sympathy to you and your family. Was wondering where you ended up after leaving urgent care and had thought fondly of the long hours spent there. You were always so patient. I remember you speaking so fondly of your mother and going to check on her. Was sorry to read about this.
