Solomon Cameron

1933 - 2016

Solomon Cameron, 83 of Gary, Indiana transitioned Tuesday November 1, 2016 at the Miller Merry Manor Nursing Facility. Solomon was born March 6, 1933 to Thomas and Hattie Cameron in Gary, Indiana. He attended Roosevelt High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and was honorably discharged. Solomon was employed for over 30 years at the United States Steel Mill and the Calumet Township Assessor Office. He was a boxer and he loved boxing and at one time, he had his own boxing group of young men he mentored and supported in many boxing matches. Awaiting his arrival is his beloved wife and caregiver until her passing Dorothy Taylor Cameron; his mother, Hattie Core Cameron; his father, Thomas Cameron, Sister Lavonia Cameron; brothers Roosevelt Moore Cameron, Douglas Arthur Cameron, and Leon Cameron; his nieces, Shirley Carr, Yvette Spears and Vanita Mason; and his nephews, Roosevelt Moore, Jr., Michael Moore, and Hilliard Pugh, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory sisters-in-law; Mable Lee (Earmon) Irons, Shirley Anne (Bill) Blakemore (caregiver) and Mattie Moore- Pugh; Nieces Roberta Wesson (caregiver) and Hattie Gault, Areta Southward, Deborah Wilson; Dalila (Floyd) Holland, Yolanda (Elder Johnnie, Jr.), Vanessa Woodruff; Nephews John (Lisa) Moore, Kevin (Waltrica) Nichols (caregiver), and Earmon Irons III; godchildren, Jackie Foley, Rev. Carlos Reed and Audra Johnson; and a host of other relatives and friends, including his New Mt. Moriah family. Visitation Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, 1917 Carolina St. Rev. W.N. Reed, officiating. Interment at Evergreen Memorial Park.
