Velma Pope

1928 - 2016

On Sunday May 22, 2016 Velma was called to eternity at Methodist Hospital Northlake. Velma was born December 20, 1928 to the proud and late parents, Chester & Sarah Powell of Ridgeland, MS. She was preceded in death by parents, husband Woodrow Pope, daughter Dorothy Walden-Roberts and 9 siblings. Velma confessed Christ at an early age and attended Simon Hill Church until she moved to Gary, IN and became a faithful member of Pilgrim M.B. Church under the late Rev. Coleman and later under Rev. Charles L. Emery. To remember her sweet spirit are two sons Larry and Eugene; 8 grandchildren Kevin Walden, Kesha Walden, Jennifer (Michael) Walden-Blackwell; LaToria (William) Porter, Tranell (Shameia) Pope, Larry (Shalanda) Pope and Nina Pope; 19 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; 2 daughters-in-law Kathy Pope and Lorean Travis; son-in-law Wayne Walden; sibling Lillie Bennett and a host of other family and friends. Visitation Thursday June 2, 2016 from 9-11a.m. with funeral services to follow at 11:00a.m. all services at Pilgrim Baptist Church. Interment Ridgelawn Cemetery.
