Arnold Foley Obituary

ARNOLD FOLEY "JIM" Passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 6, 2003. He was born on July 22, 1920 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was a Graduate of Emerson High School in Gary, Indiana. He served in the Navy during World War II and was recalled for the Korean War in 1950. An Industrial Engineer by training, he retired from Borg Warner in 1987 as head of Methods and Standards. A gifted athlete, "Junior" Foley, as he was known, pitched for the 1946 Indiana State softball championship team. His 115 miles-per-hour fast ball was one asset that lead to this induction into the Lake County Hall of Fame, the Gary's Old Timer's Athletic Association, and most notably, the Indiana Fast-Pitch Hall of Fame (1981). He was also an avid golfer. He especially excelled as a Barbershop singer. He joined the Barbershop Society in 1953, and won his first gold medal with the Michigan City Chorus in 1956. A member of numerous quartets, three time he won gold medals as a Senior Quarter champion. Most notable, however, was his membership in the quarter "The Four Renegades". With the Renegades, he won the 1985 International Championship, sang at Carnegie Hall, produced various recordings, toured with the USO during the Vietnam War, was offered a role in a Broadway musical, and sang in literally hundreds of venues across the US and Canada. In 1967, he was elected by his peers as President of the Association of International Champions, and shortly before his death, was honored by the executives of the Society for 50 years of Barbershopping. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Tiffany (nee Moss) Foley; five children, James (Kara) Foley, Rev. Edward Foley OFM Cap., Tiffany Grometer, Terrence (Peggy) Foley, Geraldine (Mitchell) Green; fifteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; his sisters, Virginia Fogelsong and Marion Skounborg; his brother, Paul Foley; and in-laws, nieces and nephews, who will forever remember his loving generosity and good natured gentleness. A private wake and private funeral with burial at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Aurora, Illinois will be celebrated by the family. A Memorial Mass of Thanksgiving for his life will be celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Naperville, Illinois on Saturday, July 12, 2003 at 10 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to "Vitas" Hospice, 580 Watersedge, Suite 100, Lombard, Illinois 60148, or The Harmony Foundation of the Barbershop Society, 6315 Third Avenue, Kenosha, Wisconsin 53143-5199. Arrangements were handled by the Healy Chapel, 370 Division Drive, Sugar Grove, Illinois 60554. For further information, call 630-466-1330 or visit our website. www.healychapel.com
