Jim Walts, of Rochester, died of bile duct cancer on June 22, 2016, at the age of 68.

He worked for IBM for 30 years and was instrumental in the software development of the System 38, the AS 400 computer, and several other projects. After retiring from IBM, Jim worked as a consultant creating websites for various customers. He then built two internet companies: National Assessor and Qpon Compass.

He was active at the First Presbyterian Church, most recently leading a large renovation project.
Sports and team building were important to Jim throughout his life. He worked with Rochester Youth Soccer and Rochester Community Youth Basketball. Jim enjoyed coaching Adrienne and her teammates. They benefited from his knowledge of tactics and skills, as well as his emphasis on team work and valuing each teammate. Ballroom dancing was an activity he found later in life and he had a lot of fun dancing with Ruth.

Jim was passionate about helping others learn and volunteered his time tutoring at Friendship Place. He also was active in the Rochester Dog Obedience Club, Trout Unlimited, Woodcarvers Club, and especially playing golf with his buddies.

His wife, Ruth, and daughter, Adrienne, along with family and a host of friends will miss him.

There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 512 Third St. SW, Rochester.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the following organizations would be appreciated: Rochester Youth Soccer Association, First Presbyterian Church activity room fund or Friendship Place, Hiawatha Chapter of Trout Unlimited, or a charity of your choice.
