Mary Mauk Obituary

Mauk, Mary Jane

Mary Jane Mauk, of Appleton, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2013. She was born in Cuba City, WI, March 17, 1928, daughter of the late John Cortland and Ada Leona (Sullivan) Clemens. Mary became the bride of Archie H. Mauk on December 28, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa, sharing 63 years together.

Mary was a stunning beauty who modeled before marriage while working in New York. After marriage she worked as a buyer for the Singer Sewing Machine company in Terre Haute, Indiana, where she taught sewing and dressed the windows with her own creations. She used her natural creative talents making beautiful clothes for herself and her daughters, prize winning costumes for her children and dance troupes. She enjoyed the challenge of attempting to repair just about anything and used her business and intellectual abilities to run Family Popcorn.

She was a compassionate second mom for kids who needed some extra attention. Mary lost her mother at three and understood the value of a hug and a kind word. Countless children who couldn't pay still left the popcorn wagon with a treat.

Mary graduated from Cuba City High School. After marriage the newlyweds moved to Terre Haute, Indiana, later settling in Appleton. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Appleton, volunteering many years in the nursery. She was a member of many charitable and fraternal organizations including White Shrine, Eastern Star, UCT and Shriners Auxiliary. She was also a Blue Star Mother and a Girl Scout Leader.

Mary is survived by her husband, Archie, and their four daughters, Melody (Tom) Fucik, Melinda Mauk-Templeton, Michelle (Daniel) Mauk-Lacy, and Mary Ann (Paul) Mauk-Schulte; four grandchildren, Benjamin Fucik, Emmeline (Jeff) Fucik Prokash, Allison (Dave) Templeton Engel, and Grant Lacy. She is further survived by former son-in-law Dr. K.M. Templeton. Mary was further preceded in death by her brother, Francis Clemens and her sister, Dorothy Westgard.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 9, 2013, at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 325 E. Franklin St., Appleton, WI, with Dr. Doyle Blanton officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday beginning at 10:00 AM until the hour of service. A memorial is being established in Mary's name for Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Mary's family would like to thank Nicole and the kind and caring staff at Renaissance Assisted Living, Suzi, Ina, Pastor Dave Farina, and the staff at Cherry Meadows.

We love you. We know your mother was waiting for you at the gate.

Mary was one of the most amazing woman I have ever known. I was in awe of her compassion and kindness. Since I knew her in her later years only, I was aware of how wonderful she was to Archie.

Dear Mauk Family, We were sorry to hear of Mary's passing. We remember her from our "early" years--Jackson school, scouts, church--and of course after that with the popcorn wagon, etc. The obituary was a lovely tribute and the pictures of her were very nice. May your hearts be lightened with many happy memories. With sympathy and prayers, The Forster girls--Kathy, Jackie, Marilyn and Susan
