HURLEY
GARRETT FRANK
Age 71, passed away on January 21, 2016, at his home on the South Side. Garrett was the proud father of Michael Lambert Hurley (Sarah Marie Conklin) of Meadville, PA, and Ian Patrick Hurley of Boston, MA; doting grandfather of Liam Robert and Owen Bradley Hurley; and lifelong friend of his former wife of 32 years, Doreen Sayers Hurley. He was born in Belmont, MA, the son of the late Robert Lambert Hurley and Gabrielle LaBonté Hurley. Garrett graduated from Manhattan College in New York City in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in finance and economics and began his military service aboard the U.S. Navy's experimental hydrofoil ship, PCH-1 Highpoint. Garrett's business career began as a financial analyst with Shell Oil in Houston, and continued with positions with Amerada Hess, W.R. Grace and Company and U.S. Steel. Garrett completed the corporation's Advanced Management Program in 1985. At his retirement in 2007 he was President of USS Real Estate. One of his proudest accomplishments was helping to lead one of U.S. Steel's largest philanthropic gifts in company history, the Red Mountain Park in Birmingham, Alabama, in collaboration with the Freshwater Land Trust. Prior to retirement he was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park, PA serving as chair of the finance committee and on the building committee, as well as being involved in many outreach ministries. He also served as treasurer of the Wesley Institute. In his retirement years, he enjoyed reading, painting, traveling, and his many friends at Fat Head's Saloon on the South Side, where he was designated a "Founding Father" of Beer Camp. Garrett is also survived by his brother, Ian Robert Hurley of New York City and nieces, Kate Hurley, Anna Hurley Ceraso, and Wendy Rehnberg, nephew, Matthew Verey Sayers, Kenneth William and Rose Sayers, Sue Hurley, and many dear friends. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jubilee Kitchen, 2005 Wyandotte St., Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 27, 2016, from 12:30-3 p.m., to celebrate the life of Garrett Hurley at the BEINHAUER FUNERAL HOME, 2630 West Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15216, 412-531-4000. Doreen and family, what a wonderful tribute. I wish I could have been with you, but in Garrett's honor will gladly donate to the Jubilee Kitchen. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

It was with great sorrow that I learned of Garrett's passing. Garrett and I were good USX friends for many years. Handsome, sophisticated, intelligent, down to earth all wrapped up with that beautiful smile, fantastic sense of humor and, of course, his wonderful New England accent.

We, and our other USX friends shared many practical jokes with Garrett while working together. I remember that his lovely wife, Doreen, would send him to work with beautiful fresh fruit to eat. Once we thought it would be a good idea to eat his big red apple and then suspend the core from the ceiling over his desk. The air conditioning made it sway like the pendulum on a clock. Well, the joke was on us when he returned to his office WITH HIS BOSS IN TOW. He took it all with good humor and laughed while we were all mortified. There were many other fun times like this in the workplace.

Such a tremendous loss. We will all miss him in so many ways. My own light burns a little dimmer now that we've lost this one-of-a-kind true gentleman.

My condolences to his entire family. He spoke of all of you and very often. His family was everything to him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Garrett was a gem, good friend and one of the most generous persons I've known. Charlotte

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
