AKIRA
Maestro Akira Endo of Boulder, CO, died Thursday, April 3, 2014, at the age of 75. He was born to the late Hikataro and Reiko Endo on November 16, 1938, in Shido, Japan, and was preceded in death by his brother, Shigehiko; and sister, Midori. Akira moved to the United States in 1954 to complete his high school education. He attended the University of Southern California where he was the concertmaster for the USC Symphony from 1960-1962, when he completed his Bachelor of Music-Cum Laude and Master of Music-Violin Performance. He began his professional career as a professor at Long Beach City College. Akira was twice awarded third prize at the prestigious Dimitri Mitropoulos International Competition for Conductors, which proved to be a spring board to national prominence when the late Leonard Bernstein recommended him to the conductor's position at the American Ballet Theater. During his ten years with ABT, he had the opportunity to conduct for almost all the major dancers during his tenure, including Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev, Natalia Makarova, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. He also held positions as the music director for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, the Miami City Ballet and the Colorado Ballet. Akira held positions as the principal conductor and music director for the Austin Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, the Long Beach Symphony, and the Hamilton Philharmonic in Canada. He also appeared as the guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the Milwaukee Symphony, the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Minnesota Orchestra, the San Antonio Symphony, the Utah Symphony, and many others as well as several orchestras and music festivals in Europe and South America. Maestro Endo also held teaching positions at the University of Miami, Duquesne University, and the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he retired in 2008. He was also a visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin, Stanford University, Rice University, and the University of Oklahoma. He recorded extensively during his conducting career. Maestro Endo's recording of the 20th Century Double-Reed Music for Crystal Records with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic earned him a Grammy nomination. Akira is survived by his wife, Keiko, of 20 years; and three children, Stephanie Endo, son, Gregory, and daughter-in-law, Jill, and Julie Gall and his son-in-law, Roger Gall; and five grandchildren, Austin, Kimberly, Cameron, Miles, and Danielle; and beloved cats, Foggy, Hazy, and Dewey. Please see www.facebook.com/endosfinale for information regarding a memorial service which will be held in Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

I had the pleasure of performing for him with the Houston Symphony back in 1986.
Great conductor to work and perform with.

Dear Keiko, this is rather belated, I was not aware
of Akiras passing. Our connection was through the
Hamilton Symphony in Canada, and we continued to meet in Miami while Akira conducted the ballet there. Spent lovely visits
and corresponded from Bolder. I wish you all the
best Keiko. Anne Mandell

I went to a classical concert last night and began thinking back to when I played the violin. In the late 1960's, I took private violin lessons from Akira when he lived in Long Beach. I decided to look him up on line, but was truly saddened to read of his passing. I still have the great violin Akira found for me. When he was conducting the orchestra at Arrowbear Music Camp, if he wanted to play a passage to demonstrate, he would always reach for my violin. Of course when he played it, it truly sang. One day when I stepped into his living room for my lesson, an adorable kitten ran up to greet me. I asked Akira what he had named it. I don't know how he spelled it, but with a GREAT BIG SMILE on his face, he said, "Her name is Cresh (or Kresh)." Get it? Cresh Endo (crescendo). I still think that was the best name ever!!!

My condolences to the Endo family on Akira's passing. Akira and I entered Wilson High School as sophomores, I playing the clarinet and he the violin. Those were very special years because Nick Furjanick our conductor was a legend in music circles in and around Long Beach for his musical scholarship. It was obvious that Akira was already headed toward greater accomplishments because of his playing skill and I felt honored to be in the same orchestra with him. Then we parted ways for many years, Akira, the musician, to USC and I the scientist to Caltech. My wife was a student for three years at the University of Colorado, so when, many years later I discovered that Akira had become a Professor of Music there, I corresponded with him a couple of times and told him how wonderful it was that he and I could cross paths, even at a distance, once again. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Endo Family,
I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Maestro Endo. I was privileged to be in one of his music classes at Long Beach City College from 1962-1963. As I read Maestro Endo's personal history, I was very touched that he dearly loved his three cats Foggy, Hazy, and Dewey. I, too, love my kitties. I send my deepest condolences to your family on the loss of your husband, father and grandfather.
With Love and Blessings,
Susan (Iwamae) Nomoto

Dear Keiko:

I was very saddened to hear of Akira's death. We worked together at the Hamilton Philharmonic and I learned to like and respect him very much, both as a person and as a musician. I am pleased to see that you never lost your passion for animals! For the past 14 years I have been working with a rescue group in this area but I never forgot the little one your fed smoked salmon on your back porch in Hamilton.

Dear Keiko,
How shocked we were to hear of Akira's passing. We worked with him while he was in Hamilton, before we moved to Cape Cod. Please let us know where you are, so we can write to you more fully. He was one of our very favorite people, as well as a fine musician. Email- [email protected]

I am so sorry to hear of Akira's passing; my condolences to his family. I first met Akira when we were in high school in Long Beach, at Arrowbear music camp. We were friends, and over the years played chamber music together at his home (he playing violin excellently), and later when he conducted the Long Beach
Symphony. He was a kind soul, and will be missed by so many.
Rest in peace, my friend.

So sorry to hear this news. I remember Akira well from U.S.C. in Los Angeles. I looked up to him and admired him so much. He lives in my memories.

Akira was a breath of fresh air among conductors. He made Nutcrackers fun, and was a marvelous man to work with at St Bart's. He had a kind humility that I always appreciated. Blessings to his family, John Hunter

My best memories of Akira Endo were from Arrowbear Music Camp, where he conducted a bunch of high school campers in a much more rustic setting than he usually found himself. Now, as an adult, having read his accomplishments, I fully understand the incredible experience this was. I know I had no idea of his talent. Thank you, Akira, for the gifts you shared with us.

I am so sad to hear of Akira's passing. I have known him for many years as I was one of his students as a violist and when he was at Arrowbear Music Camp in California. It was because of his love for music and teaching that I continued to play the viola until my junior year of college when I persued my chosen field of study. I send my condolences to the family. He will be greatly missed.

Rest in peace Akira! You have brought music and the joy of moving to it to so many people!

Oh this makes me so sad. I first met him when he was at the helm of the Austin Symphony. He left Austin to conduct for ABT where I saw him again over the years. Then we met up once again when he was conducting at Chautauqua. He always greeted me with a smile and "How are things in Austin?" He was a kind, generous, lovely man who truly loved dancers. A gifted conductor and a gift to all with whom he collaborated and all who were members of his audiences.
RIP, maestro.

My condolences to Akira's family and friends. He was always so kind to me when I was dancing with The American Ballet Theatre. He used to call me Judy-san. So sorry to hear of his passing. Judith Siegfried
