I too was enchanted with the magic of Jack Smith. Lucky to have had our stars crossin life. He was one of the most magical humans I have ever met...enlightenment happened wherever Jack was ...you were such a good friend and I always loved you Jack Smith...always thought you and Cathy and I would have another laugh somewhere...guess it will be in the stars....susie starfish

So the planet has been without Jack Smith since 2010. I had a feeling something was missing. My thanks to Jack, for his genius, his strength, his amazing talent as a writer, his friendship, and his generosity. His good friend, my husband Christian de Rudder, preceded him in death. It would be wonderful to think of them continuing their outrageous and wonderful conversations (and fights!) in heaven. At the very least, I am glad they are stardust. Jack, rest in peace, and may your children and grandchildren thrive, be strong, and live fabulously and largely, as you did!

We just learned of Jack's passing today. We didn't get to know Jack for very long, but we wish we had. His visits to our coffeehouse were always appreciated. On the days when he was up to it, we'd happily let him share some of his amazing stories. What an interesting man and what an interesting life. Although our acquaintance with Jack was all too brief, his spirit and character will be sorely missed.
Our deepest sympathies on your loss,
February 14, 2010
Please accept our family's sympathies on your loss. Jack will be remembered by us as a very creative and sensitive person. May he rest in peace.

Rosemarie, I am so sorry to hear that your dad has passed away. I'll never forget the last day I saw you in the pharmacy knowing that that day may have been his last. My heart broke for you. I know how special your dad was to you. It showed so much in how well you took care of him. The love you had beamed on your face. (and he knew it!!).
I always had a soft heart for him when he came in to get his medicine. I always wanted to do what I could for him. I often felt so helpless though.
Know that he is no longer in the terrible pain that he was in. His suffering is over. He was such a fighter but his time had come to give up the fight and let God take care of him.
Chersih all of your memories (and I am sure their were many!)...he seemed like such a character. He made me smile. May God rest his soul.
With sympathy,
Tammy from Lebanon Shops Pharmacy

I would rather be ashes than dust
I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dryrot.
I would rather be a superb meteor ,
every atom of me in magnificent glow
than a sleepy and permanent planet.
the proper function of man is to live,
not to exist.
I shall not waste my days
in trying to prolong them .
I shall use my time
This was how Jack Smith lived his life ,with passion and a true sense of
spirit .
He was my lifelong friend of 41 years .
He was my truest and best friend and the greatest love of my life .
He fought the good fight and did not leave this earth with a whimper .
He is still with us in our minds, hearts and memories . I know he has left an indelible mark on my mine.
Like I said Jack at our last parting ..we will see each other again even if it is in Gods mansion.
My love goes out to Christian and Rosemarie ,Stephie,Patti,Liza and Susan for all we have been through and knowing that Jack had so much love from us all ..God bless Siobhan and her family for their loss .thinking of you all in love and light .

In the years that I knew Jack he made me smile, laugh, think and learn so much...I was always ready to hear another story of his, and he kept them coming. I cannot even begin to express what a loss this is...Jack was a great man and a great friend, and I miss him already.

Jack was unique and a poet to be sure. Thank you Jack for all the crazy conversations through the Oregon mist; those were special and inspiring times that I am truly thankful for, and they have remained with me all these years. Rosemarie and Christian, my love to you both and I hope to hear from you in time. ~ Regan

To Jack's Family: It is with sadness I read this. Sadness for his passing, and sadness that we were not connected since childhood. We were cousins, and he would come to Indiana to visit Grandma and Grandpa Smith occasionally. We were the family that lived in Indiana also, and loved to see Jackie on those rare occasions. When I was a senior in high school, my graduation class traveled to Washington DC, and Gettysburg, etc. I called Jackie, he came and picked up myself and a few of my very cute classmates, and took us to his party while Uncle Rusty and Aunt Rose were away. He and his friends introduced us to Vodka!! What a great time we had. I'm sorry to say that was in 1965, and I soon lost touch with him with my overseas travels and his busy life. What an honor to have a James Dean good looking and fun cousin. Again, I'm sorry for your loss and mine. With love and condolences, Christy Smith Quiggle [email protected]

What a smile...and what a life! I wish I had known Jack through the years, but my memories of him from Mt.Lebanon High School are indelible! He was so happy, fun, and full of mischief...a free spirit in a time when so many of us were trying to be too good!! Blessings to all who loved him and may God grant him peace and the applause he deserves.

Jack and I were friends and classmates in the Class of '59 at Mt. Lebanon High School. I had the good fortune to reconnect with him by phone and correspondence last fall. He was a terrific writer and a very caring and honest person. I send my deepest sympathies to Stephanie and the family.

I lost track of Jack ,many years ago, and I'm sure he lost track of me. I am Lauri and Esther's youngest son, Mickey. I remmber Jack intoduced me to rock & roll With Elvis' song, You Ain't Nothing but a Houndog. I was a little to young to know about teenage rebellion yet but Jack tried his best to instill it in me. I think of him every time I hear that song. May God be with you during this time of loss and seperation. Rev. Mickey Dooling, Philipsburg, Montana
