GENE LUDWIG Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 18 to Jul. 20, 2010.
LUDWIG GENE
Age 72 of Monroeville formerly of Regent Square on Wednesday, July 14, 2010. Beloved husband of Patricia (Zamborsky) Ludwig. Predeceased by his three brothers: Edwin (surviving spouse, Violet) Ludwig of Monroeville, Roger Ludwig, and John Ludwig. wonderful uncle of Paul R, Mark, & Brian Ludwig. Gene Ludwig was born in Twin Rocks, PA on September 4, 1937. His family moved to Swissvale, PA in 1941, where Gene spent most of his youth and graduated from Swissvale High School in 1955. His mother provided young Gene with piano lessons as early as the first grade at age 6 and witnessed his musical growth from then on. She would have preferred that he become a concert pianist but soon realized that his musical preference lay in Rhythm and Blues. Gene met Jimmy Smith in 1957 and that meeting spurred a major change in Gene's career - he wanted to play the Hammond organ. Two years later he bought his first Hammond organ (1959) and has never regretted his decision. Friends will be received Monday 7-9 PM and Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the JOBE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES INC. (MONROEVILLE/PLUM CHAPEL) corner of Beatty Rd. & 48 North, Monroeville (412 856-4747). A Musical Tribute Jam in memory of Gene will take place Wednesday 11 AM at Palmieri's Restaurant in Plum with a luncheon to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pittsburgh CAPA School, 111 Ninth St. Pittsburgh, PA 15222 so that a young individual may learn how music can touch their life. www.jobefuneralhome.com.

Gene, you are still an inspiration to me and my music. I cherish the records you made that taught me so much about how to approach the wonderful Hammond organ as an instrument to express my own ideas. I miss your kindness and the jazz world definitely misses your presence. But thankfully your spirit lives on in those you touched and the music you left behind as your legacy.

With love always,
~ Jim Alfredson

Gene Ludwig played with my mom, Artie Cordice. He was always a gentleman. I will truly miss his skills and talent on that organ -- that he loved so much and played so well. God bless his soul. My condolences and blessings to his family.

Dearest Patty, I had the pleasure of meeting your beloved and talented husband - Gene Ludwig - several years ago when he played in a tribute to Stanley Turrentine at Jazz@Lincoln Center in New York. He was also a good friend of my Dad's - jazz great Walt Harper. You have my deepest sympathies at your time of loss. He was such a talented and great musical force and he will be deeply missed.
God bless you. Sharynn Harper - New York - [email protected]

My friend, Gerry, who lives in Pittsburgh and plays bass...called me last night. Hadn't spoken to him in months. Phone rings; I see the caller ID. I pick up and say, "you're gonna tell me Gene Ludwig died." Gerry: "WHEN! OMG!!!" Instead of spending the next hour talking about our lives, we talked about Gene and what a nice guy he was to everyone. Pattye--as nice a guy as he was to all who knew him--he must have been that much greater a husband. Gene had a fantastic life by anyone's measure, especially in marriage and music. We are all sorry for your loss. It's our loss, too. It's times like this you find out who your friends are. You are blessed to have so many.

No words will lessen your sorrow or fill that empty space. Be comforted, I pray, with the knowledge that "Little "Luddy" ( to those who knew John and Roger) was well - loved and a kind and caring man.

His talent remains forever in the hearts of those who heard him play.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not here, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that swiftly blow.
I am the diamond glint on newly fallen snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the soft and gentle autumn rain
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there, I did not die.

Gene was a true gentleman and a master musician who will be sadly missed. I recently had the pleasure and honor to sit in on one of his gigs and he was most gracious. My deepest sympathy,
Judi

Dearest Pattye,
The Jazz community has lost a giant, the one and only Gene Ludwig. What a kind and generous man he was and he always had a smile on his face. I always had a ball working with him, and the gigs we did together will always be playing in my head. His laugh was so special and there were lots jokes to pass along. I have wonderful memories which I will cherish. I know in my heart that we will see him again.
With deepest sympathy,

I saw Gene perform many times with Eric Kloss in the late 60's and 70's and once he was at the Crawford, I believe, where we watched Richard 'Groove' Holmes perform. He matched Groove perfectly, tone for soulful tone and from then on, I became a fan, fully appreciative of the local flavor. The Pittsburgh and world jazz communities have lost a great one.

Dear Pattye,
I regret that I didn't get to spend more time and get to play more often with Gene. We had one glorious week end at the MCG with Gene and Roger Humphries and myself ..
He was a beautiful guy and one heck of a " jazz " man.
He will be missed but, not forgotten .
My deepest condolences to you on your loss.
