I just learned of Mr.D's passing. I had trumpet lessons from him in the early 1960s. ( West Mifflin North High school)
He was such a wonderful guy. He was patient and kind and helped me enjoy music. I looked forward to my lesson sessions each week. My family did not have much money and he understood if I had to skip paying a week until I had $ from my afterschool jobs.

From our big sound as the drum line took the band onto the football field to our elegant concert band performances on stage, Mr. D always inspired us as musicians and band members. May his memory forever be a source of inspiration to his family, friends and students.

I always liked Henry. I knew him first while I was a member of the All City Orchestra. Mr. D was there to assist in any way he could.
Later, I returned to Allderdice as a teacher. I got to know Henry as a co-worker. The faculty and students liked and respected Henry because of the fine man he was.Henry always had a smile.
Henry was a gracious host. When I went to his place, he always pulled out a bottle of wine and "Salute"
I know Henry will be missed by his wife Grace, his children, and his many friends. There will never be another one like him. I will always remember Henry in a happier time in my life.

Sorry to hear of Mr. D's passing. He was an exceptional music educator with a big heart. He made the band program at Taylor Allderdice High School an amazing experience the six years that I played clarinet under his direction in the 1960's. He also provided expert guidance in his role as a music director of the musical Once Upon a Mattress to my sister in her senior year with her first starring role in a theatrical production. - Marsha Polk

I was a member of the Allderdice band from 1970 to 1972. Mr D was an amazing educator
who taught us music, discipline and how to enjoy performing. if he gave us a difficult piece for the first time and we played it right!!! he would say, "lets play it again to be sure that was not a mistake!" Mr. D loved teaching and conducting. he was also an incredible trumpet player as we say a few times when the trumpet section could not do a piece, Mr. D would pull out his mouthpiece, take someones horn and play the bars effortlessly and flawlessly, the first time! he understood us and he knew music. a great teacher, he will be missed.
Henry's Children thank you for honoring Dad!

From '62-'68, I looked forward to playing in Mr. D's Band on a daily basis. He was a dedicated and caring teacher. I vividly recall his enthusiasm on the football field with the marching band and on the concert stage. After 45 years, I still wear my TAHS band jacket on special occasions! Each time, I fondly remember HDP.

Heartfelt condolences to Mr D's family and friends. My Band leader and favorite teacher will be always remembered for his gentle yet firm direction. TAPS was beautifully played in Millvale two years ago and brought tears to my eyes. We were saddened to learn of his ill health and that he was unable to join us at our 50th Class Reunion. Fondly, David Slavkin, TAHS 1964.

Mr. D made the Allderdice band relevant when he arrived. He was my band director from 1962 to 1965. He inspired me to pursue my major in music education at Duquesne and Indiana University. I have fond memories of a wonderful fellow trumpet player.

Mr. D! He was my Band teacher at Taylor Allderdice High School from 1970 to 1975. I had so much fun marching at the football games and traveling to play at other schools. God bless you Mr. D and thank you for sharing your love of music! My condolences to his family.
