GERALD HART Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 16 to May 7, 2014.
HART GERALD E.
Beloved husband of 60 years to Gene Hart, passed peacefully on Monday, April 14, 2014. Born April 8, 1931, in Manhattan, NY to Joe and Ruth Ann Hart. Big Ger and Gene raised six children and boast frequently of their 21 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Big Ger attended Brooklyn Prep HS, West Point Military Academy, as well as Kansas State University and Columbia University. He was active and involved in many organizations including the Iron and Steel Institute, the Economic Club of Detroit, served as chairman of the Pope John XXIII Hospitality House as well as a board member of the Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Center. He was also proud of his affiliation with Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Alpha Kappa Psi Business fraternity. His professional career was highlighted by 30 years at J&L/LTV, followed by another ten years split between Fruehauf and Dietrich Industries. In his spare time, he worked over a decade in the NFL and USFL as a football official after playing in the NFL for the Detroit Lions and SF 49ers. Before that, his athletic highlights included NCAA heavy weight boxing title and having played on the last undefeated West Point football team. He was an avid golfer and, over the years, a proud member of Oakland Hills, Bloomfield Hills and Oakmont Country Clubs where he shot his only hole in one! Carrying the torch and advancing his zest for life includes: son, Kevin (Peggy) Hart and their children, Michael, Patrick, Ryan, Caitlin and Brendan; daughter, Mary (Kirk) Ferentz and their children, Brian, Kelly, Joanne (Tyler), James and Steven; son, Joe (Mary Elaine) Hart and their children, Maureen, Catherine, Kevin and Michael; daughter, Bunny (Tim) Bennett and their children Madison and Tom; daughter, Patty (Girard) Phillips and their children, Joe, Matt, Annie and Jimmy; daughter, Margie (Wade) Souza and their son, Ben and finally, Brian (first grandchild) and Nicole Ferentz delivered his first great- granddaughter, Presley. Today we are counting our blessings for having him in our lives and are confident Big Ger's spirit will live on through all of us whose lives he so lovingly touched. No visitation. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014, at 10 a.m. at St. Scholastica Church, 309 Brilliant Ave., Aspinwall. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial contributions to Family Hospice, 50 Moffett St. Pittsburgh, PA 15243. Arrangements by WEDDELL - AJAK FUNERAL HOME, Aspinwall.

Although we only met the Harts a few times Gerry made a lasting impression on us all. He was a man that you could respect & admire and at the same time be baffled by his stories. I could only wish that someone could lead the life he did. The leeson to us all is that never give in, never stop, and get out of life as much as you can. He had one heck of a run.

I will always remember his wit, his great/hysterical stories, and his teasing! He was a man of strength, who instilled love, respect, and caring to everyone around him and he will be sorely missed...blessings, xoxo Mike & Susan Keith

Big Ger was one of my favorite clients. I loved when he came in with Gene and talked about his grandchildren. He was never without a smile or story. He will be sorely missed.
With deep sympathy,
