RUTH KYSEL Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 19, 2015.
KYSEL RUTH CONOVER
Passed away on April 13, 2015, at Concordia of Fox Chapel near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was 93 years old. Ruth was born on August 17, 1921, and raised in Newark, New Jersey. She was valedictorian of her high school class and voted most likely to succeed. Ruth graduated from Montclair State College in Montclair, New Jersey, before enlisting in the United States Navy, where she worked in intelligence and attained the rank of Lieutenant. She was last stationed in Norfolk, Virginia during the Second World War. After leaving the service, she worked for some years at the Bell Telephone Company. While there, she met her husband, Joseph Patrick Kysel, on a blind date. Ruth spent most of her professional life as a teacher. For 29 years, she taught high school English at Fort Lee High School in Fort Lee, New Jersey. She was the advisor to the National Honor Society chapter and founded and led a successful exchange program for students there. For nearly a decade, she and her husband participated in the American Host Program for teachers from abroad. Ruth was a trusted mentor to many of her students and fellow teachers, leading to a number of lifelong friendships. Ruth was a quick wit and was animated by an insatiable curiosity. She and her husband, Joe, traveled to more than 30 countries on six continents. Istanbul, Turkey, was a favorite destination. She was a four-time Jeopardy! winner and also a repeat-winner on the Who, What, or Where Game. The New York Times crossword puzzles were a favorite pastime. She was also an aspiring author. Ruth and her husband, Joe, were married for 67 years before her passing, theirs was a loving and committed partnership. Ruth and Joe lived for many years in River Edge, New Jersey where they raised their children. They opened their home to and cared for their children and grandchildren many times over the years. She was a devoted, and forceful, matriarch. Above all, her passion was education. She challenged others to achieve great things and forever encouraged and supported her three children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren to enrich their lives through learning. Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Alan Thomas Conover and Marguerite Hasfeld Conover; and her daughter, Margaret "Peggy" Venn Rubin. She is survived by her husband, Joe; their sons, Andrew Joseph Kysel and Paul Alan Kysel (Kristine); five grandchildren, Christopher, Joseph, Ian, Emma and Elizabeth; and two great-grandchildren, Jack and Samantha. She is still, anxiously, waiting for Godot. PROFESSIONAL SERVICES ENTRUSTED TO THOMAS M. SMITH FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, LTD., BLAWNOX.

Ruth was a very beloved english teacher in and great influence in my high school years and beyond. She was the first person in my life to encourage independent thinking and suggested questioning the world around me. She helped me develope persaverance which carried me though many life situations. I will always think of her fondly and be deeply grateful I knew her.

Ruth was my teacher, friend and mentor. She helped shape my life's path during my junior and senior years of high school. Both she and her husband Joe were always there for me. I last saw them both at the class of 1970 FLHS reunion in 2010. This was a truly great woman who touched so many and she will be in my heart forever.

I still talk about Mrs. Kysel to this day. I'm glad to hear she made impressions upon others as well. She was a zesty, spicy, shoot from the hip, lady! She was great! And she gave me a college recommendation! :) I think she was my English teacher sophomore year (1975)

Ms. Kysel was my favorite teacher (12th Grade Humanities 1985), even though I know in HS I didn't appreciate her as fully as I should have. She believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. A great teacher and extraordinary person. RIP...I should think the conversation between her and whatever God she believed in would be remarkable.

Mrs. Kysel was an amazing English teacher. She never failed to care about and show interest in her students and I am fortunate to have had her as a teacher while at Fort Lee High School. Many of my fondest memories are of her and the way she made learning English a complete joy. Rest in peace and thank you for all that you taught me.

Mrs. Kysel was my senior year English teacher at Fort Lee High School. She also took the Honor Society members to Chetek Wisconsin as a part of exchange program and "the kids from NJ" was on the front page of the local news paper. She was kind, provocative, patient, and the best teacher ever. Thank you Mrs. Kysel.

Ruth was probably my greatest mentor and advocate, as was her way. Ruth exemplified approaching everything with a zest only she could achieve. Ruth never walked if she could, instead, run. As a mentor Ruth was never intimidated by her peers or those she so kindly mentored. Her affect on me had no dollar value. Ruth was the best! She was a million dollar lady. I am grateful for the time she so generously gave to me. Rest in Peace my friend. Your work on earth is done.
