JERRY FULMER Obituary

FULMER
JERRY B.
Age 79, of Upper St. Clair, devoted husband, loving father, and active member of the community died on May 22, 2015, following a long battle with cancer. Jerry is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dina (Johnson) Fulmer; their children, Christopher Fulmer (Julie) of Raleigh, NC, and Stephanie Fulmer- Smentek (David) of Cupertino, CA; five grandchildren, Andrew, Caroline and Kathryn Fulmer, and Benjamin and Zachary Smentek; his brother, William Fulmer (Elisabeth) of Clarion, PA; sisters-in-law, Lynne Johnson of South Fayette and Janice Flock (Howard) of Atlantic Beach, FL; six nieces and nephews; 14 grandnieces and grandnephews; and many cousins. Born on May 19, 1936, in Franklin, PA, Jerry was the first son of Mary Lois (Borland) and Wendell Fulmer. Jerry graduated from Franklin High School in 1954 and received a B.A. in History from Harvard College in 1958 and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1961. After a short stint in the U.S. Army, Jerry joined Alcoa as a general attorney in December 1962. He spent his entire legal career with Alcoa, including service at Alcoa's European headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, from July 1970 through December 1974. Jerry retired in December 1996 but continued to serve as a legal consultant through 2012. While an inveterate traveler, self-taught pianist and painter, and classical music lover, Jerry's primary passion was politics. He was a dedicated Republican, having been a member of the College Young Republicans at Harvard and serving as Massachusetts College Young Republicans Chairman in 1960-61. Upon settling in Pittsburgh, he became active in the Allegheny County Young Republicans, where he met his wife. A member of the Republican Committee of Upper St. Clair since 1975, Jerry served as the committee's chairman from 1976 to 2003. Jerry preferred working behind the scenes in politics, advising and encouraging those candidates he thought well-qualified and quietly counseling those he believed fell short of the mark. He was one of the original board members of the Allegheny Institute for Public Policy. Jerry was an intrepid theater-goer, and he and Dina made annual pilgrimages to both the Shaw and the Shakespeare Festivals in Canada, seeing as many plays as possible, usually two a day, in addition to an annual theater trip to London. His love of theater translated into his service on the Board of Directors of Little Lake Theatre. Jerry was known for his calm demeanor and pragmatic attitude, rarely raising his voice and never resorting to vulgarity or profanity to make his point. Both a gentleman and a gentle man, Jerry's death leaves a hole in many lives. The family especially thanks Elise Herman, Carrie Morgele, and Mary Beth Potts of Family Hospice for their gracious care of Jerry during his last months. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the St. Clair Country Club. Memorial contributions may be made to Little Lake Theatre (http://www.littlelake.org or 500 Lakeside Dr., Canonsburg, PA 15317) or Family Hospice and Palliative Care (https:www.familyhospicepa. org or 50 Moffett St., Pittsburgh, PA 15243). Dearest Dina,
We extend our deepest sympathies to you and your family. We both knew Jerry through our years at Alcoa. I (Nancy) had the good fortune to work with Jerry in the Legal Department. I always deeply admired and respected him. After retirement, our friendship continued with the both of you through the theater. We will miss Jerry. The description of him in the obituary was so very well stated: "Both a gentleman and a gentle man." Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Sorry to hear of Jerry's passing. I only knew him from High School but he exhibited the same quick wit and reasoned resolve described and implied in the obituary. He will be missed.
