Kenneth Saylor Obituary

KENNETH W. SAYLOR JR., LT. COLONEL, AIR FORCE, RETIRED Kenneth Woodrow Saylor Jr., husband of Mary (McCue) Saylor of Upper Providence, died Monday, January 9, 2012 at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara M. (Binder) Saylor in 1976. Born in Mont Clare, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Violet (Myers) Saylor of Pottstown. Mr. Saylor was a 1950 graduate of Pottstown High School where he participated in football and track and was named as a high school All American in football. He went on to attend Fresno State College (University) on a football scholarship and graduated with a degree in business. He later attended the University of Tennessee where he received a Master of Science degree in educational administration. Following graduation from Fresno State College he entered the Air Force from which he retired in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1978 after 23 years service. Among his duties while in the Air Force were tours in the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as Director of Administration for the Alaskan Air Command, as security officer in the Air Force satellite photography program, as commander of various squadrons and as Professor of Aerospace Studies at Newberry College, Newberry, South Carolina. Following retirement from the Air Force he worked as Aerospace Education Instructor in Warner Robins High School, GA, prior to returning to Pottstown. After returning to Pottstown he was the first director of the Pottstown Governor's Veterans Outreach and Assistance Center. He later became a central office administrator in the Pottsgrove School District from which he retired in 1994. Mr. Saylor was an active member of New Hanover Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Disable Veterans of America, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Retired Officer Association. He served in the United Way of the Pottstown and Upper Perkiomen Areas where he was president of the board three times. He also served as a member of the Spring-Ford area Youth Assistance Panel and as a Red Cross volunteer. Surviving with his wife are three daughters, Denise M., wife of Jon Dittrich, Knoxville, TN; Michele A., wife of Jerry Britton, Etters, Pa, and Laura J., at home, and four grandchildren. Services will be held at New Hanover Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lutheran Road, Gilbertsville on Thursday, January 12, 2012. Friends will be received from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Pottstown. Arrangements are by the Catagnus Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Ltd., 329 N. Lewis Road, Royersford.
