Dear Jim and Family
I want to extend my condolenses for the loss of your father.
I enjoyed having him as a teacher and then coaching and teaching with him over the years at Beacon. He was a friend and mentor to many.
May he rest in peace and God bless your family.

Coach was my gym teacher many, many years ago. He gave fair and just treatment to all both as a coach and as a driving teacher. My sympathy to his family.

his no non-sense driving instruction at Beacon High School saved more than one life, I know that for a fact. I had "Big Jim" lean over and yank the wheel out of my hands one time when I was making a stupid left hand turn in front of an oncoming vehicle who I was sure would know that he had to slow down to let me through the intersection (it was a cop car). Years later on Route 9A south of Peekskill late at night, no street lights, 4 lanes undivided highway hemmed in by guardrails, no shoulders at all. I was in the passenger seat and dimly saw a disabled car stopped in the right (our) lane. On that model car all of the tail lights, even the reflectors apparently were mounted on the trunk lid. Two men must have been trying to get a tire out of the trunk, and one was blocking even the license plate so there was no reflectors at all viable to our car coming up from behind. There was our car and another car traveling at the same speed next to us in the next lane. There wasn't any time to yell for the driver of our car to even slow down. Reactively I leaned over as Big Jim had done to me and just pushed on the top of the steering whee to the left just enough that we just got by the car in front of us by inches (luckily the car to the left of us was awake enough to swerve out of our way. Those two guys no doubt never heard of Coach Gauriloff but there's never so much as a month goes by in all of the years since that I don't think of some pearl of wisdom that would literally bellow from his lips ... SLOW DOWN, TOO FAST FOR CONDITIONS !!... DRIVE THE CAR, DON"T LET THE CAR DRIVE YOU!! And his unforgettable comment when in referring to accident reports in the newspaper - that so and so "lost control" of his vehicle: HE NEVER HAD CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE IN THE FIRST PLACE!! Whoever drives the hearse carrying the Coach to the cemetery just better watch out, that's all I can say.

To My NY Cousins:
I'm so very sorry to hear about Uncle Jimmy. I have fabulous memories of his booming voice and love of life. Your family's visits to Erie were always looked forward to. He and Aunt Alice are reunited, and somewhere in heaven is a fun party going down. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To the Gauriloff family, I send my deepest sympathy. I first remember Mr Gauriloff teaching me and my fellow grade school classmates kickball at Spring Street School. Later I knew him from Beacon High. My parents worked with your parents in the Booster Club of BHS. I'm so sorry of your loss.
Sincerely,

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
