Richard Reid Obituary

Richard Reid, Jr.

Pawling -

Richard Reid Jr. 83, a 44 year resident of Pawling, quietly slipped away on October 18th at his home, under the watchful eye of his faithful family. He was born in Augusta, Georgia on June 24, 1930, to Richard Reid, KSG, the 1936 Laetare Medal Recipient and Katherine O'Leary Reid.

He was predeceased by his two sisters, Kathleen Reid and Sister Mary Richard Reid, an Ursuline educator of New Rochelle and Boston. He has two brothers, Thomas Reid, of Cleveland, Ohio and his identical twin James Reid, a Professor at Wesleyan University.

In 1940, his father was hired by the Archdioceses of New York to edit the Catholic News, so they left Dixie in the '36 Plymouth to become Yankees. He was an alumnus of Iona Prep and the School of Engineering at Manhattan College. Mr. Reid earned his United States Navy Wings after attending the Naval Air Force School at Pensacola.

On November 26, 1956, he was married to Carol Millette of Flushing, NY, at Saint Andrew of Avellino Catholic Church. Mrs. Reid survives him at home.

In 1960, Mr. Reid earned his Masters of Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University. He and Carol began raising five children in Williamstown, Mass. before moving to Pawling in 1969. His children are all educators. Kathleen Reid, Richard III, Sally Reid McGrath, Robert Reid and Carolyn (Lyn) Reid Deslandes.

Rick was the Technical Director at Hipotronics in Brewster, NY. He was a Commissioner for the Pawling Fire Department, a past President of the Pawling School Board and one time Treasurer for Pawling Little League.

He was quietly proud of his prodigious grandchildren: Reid McGrath, Hannah McGrath, Meredith L. Reid, Jerry Deslandes Jr., Liam McGrath, Anne Reid, Lily Reid, Peter Reid, Richard Reid Deslandes, Abby Reid, Carly McGrath and Ben Hartford. He also was proud to include his son in laws Tom Hartford, Blake McGrath, and Jerry Deslandes Sr, and daughter in law Terri Reid and Sharon Tuz. He had 23 nieces and nephews.

He was a member of St. John's Parish of Pawling. He loved to go deer hunting in Vermont with his Hipotronics friends and was an avid computer science hobbyist. He preferred political debate to sports without exception. He was a private and humble man but an absolutely frenetic texting buddy. He loved playing Words With Friends and 'liked' all his grandchildren's posts on facebook. We are all heartbroken that his iphone has gone silent.

Calling hours are 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Monday, October 21, 2013 at the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10am on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at St. John's the Evangelist, Pawling.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pawling Fire Department, Alzheimer's Association, American Heart Association, or to your favorite charity. Also in the spirit of remembrance, volunteer.

Such a sweet & kind gentle man..he and Carol complimented each other so well...always there for his beloved wife and children/grandchildren. The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
