Poughkeepsie - James A. Weidenhammer, age 94, of Poughkeepsie, died Saturday, January 26, 2013 at The Pines At Poughkeepsie in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was born March 1, 1918, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late Harry S. and the late Elizabeth Muth Weidenhammer.
He graduated from Allentown High School in 1934 and was a graduate of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Class of 1938, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Following graduation from Lehigh, he was employed by IBM as a Junior Engineer, in Endicott, New York. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1943 and was sent to Aberdeen Proving Grounds where he attended Officers Training School. Following this, he was sent to California where he served until his discharge in 1946. He returned to IBM in Endicott and was transferred to Poughkeepsie in 1948 where he retired as an IBM Fellow in 1977. Following his retirement, he spent many hours restoring and especially, driving antique White Steam cars on annual tours from New England to the Mountain States.
He is survived by his wife, the former Eleanor Passmore Duckworth whom he married on April 14, 1977, his sister Mary W. Smith, and Many nieces and nephews, as well as several great nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held 11:30 am on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 10:30am to 11:30am. Burial will be in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie New York.
The family asks , in lieu of flowers donations be made to the LaGrange Library 488 Freedom Plains Road, Suite 100, Poughkeepsie, New York 12603 or to a charity of your choice.
