Frank Knobloch Obituary

Frank A. Knobloch

Red Hook - Frank Albert Knobloch, 73, of Red Hook, NY, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2014.

He was a lifelong advocate for education of every kind. He worked tirelessly to cultivate others' engagement in teaching and learning, especially young people taking on the job of shaping their own educations. He was a genuine humanist who understood the value of a broad educational foundation for all students. He had an increasing interest in the importance of the performing arts, working to establish performing arts spaces and opportunities for Red Hook students.

Active in his community, Frank was a long-time School Board member, and was instrumental in establishing the Red Hook Education Foundation. He was an active member of the local Democratic Party, and enthusiastic supporter of the Red Hook Library, among other local efforts.

He served in the United States Army Special Forces from 1961 to 1964 stationed in Bad Tölz, Germany. Even in the Army he was an avid reader, and worked in the base library before being deployed to Germany. He completed his formal education when he returned to the United States; he earned a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to complete a PhD In English from the University of Wisconsin, and was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in Portugal.

Everything he did gathered the company of people who became friends—in real estate, golf at the Edgewood Club of Tivoli, politics, good food and drink, trivia tournaments, and animated talk. He appreciated a fine job of work in all things, whether it was bread making, chess, BBQ, dog training, pool, or writing.

Known as Al in his family, he was born on May 5, 1941, in Copiague, NY, to the late Frank A. and J. Lobyron (Allen) Knobloch. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Jane Knobloch of Red Hook, NY.

He is survived by his longtime companion Evelyn Krueger of Red Hook, NY; his daughter; Frieda Knobloch, granddaughters Grete Telander (Andrew) and Nellie Newman, great-granddaughters Hazel and Vivian Telander, all of Laramie, WY; his sister & brother-in-law; Betsy & William (Bill) Robertson of Fairbanks, AK; Evelyn's daughter Linda Krueger and grandsons Ian and Erik Mathews of Irvington, NY and daughter Rita Krueger (Mark Pollack), and grandchildren Cameron and Fiona Pollack of Philadelphia, PA.

Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes, Red Hook on Saturday, July 12, 2014, from 1pm with a time of sharing at 2pm. A reception will follow c. 4pm at the Elmendorph Inn, 2562 Rt 9 (N. Broadway) in the Village of Red Hook.
