Condolences to Peter's friends and family. He and I were fellow art department students in 70/71 and have sporadically communicated since then.

Peter was a dear friend of mine. He was a dear friend to many. I adored his warmth, his wit and his explosive laugh. I made a portrait of him in Nov. of 2013 which didn't actually demonstrate any of these things, rather it explored another more contemplative side. The obit photo does a much better job of capturing the ebullient character that so many knew. He was a terrific storyteller. One of my favorites was about his visit to the office of the Graduate School dean, where we went to fill out forms for his impending retirement. He said to the secretary, "I bet you get a lot of very happy requesting this form." She said back "No one as happy as you!" He was such a great guy. I'll really miss him.

I am so sad I didn't take the time to visit, I have been thinking of you both quite often for the past few months. If I can be of any help to you, Josephine, please don't hesitate to call. Rest in peace my friend.

I knew Peter at the University of Iowa from 1965-70, and then looked forward to seeing him for many Thanksgivings at our mutual friend Janyce McMeniman's annual gathering. He was fun, funny, silly, brilliant, talented, and sweet. I treasure the time I spent with him.

Peter and I would stop each other on the street and talk politics. He was funny and provocative. I also admired his art. He was more than a photographer. He explored shapes and textures in a wonderful way. I will miss him.

Peter, I will miss making you laugh. I remember wearing my cockroach costume into a big meeting of the Iowa Arts Council with the state's educators. I got in to some trouble for doing it but I knew that you loved it. I will miss you. Sharon

I first met Peter and Josephine when i was their dental hygienist. When I changed dentists, our relationship was so important that they followed me without my saying anything. I will always remember after having a serious illness and surgery, both of them showed up at our home with flowers and kind spirits. I am now nearly 65 years old and was 33 at the time. I have never forgotten this kindness. We moved to Seattle with our children in 1988 but thanks to Facebook , Peter and I reconnected a few years ago. I had the opportunity to thank him and tell him how much their act of kindness had touched me. Josephine, I am so very sorry for your loss. You two are such special people.

When we met coincidentally in Amsterdam 3 years ago, we spent good time together after not meeting for a decade. We had lunch and talked about everything, to catch up with what we missed, until the evening! It was a unique chance and we both agreed to repeat it regularly in Iowa, but we never did. Your friendship and legacy will remain with us forever, dear Peter!

I am so grieved to hear Peter has died. I felt so attached to Peter as a friend. I cannot enumerate the long list of ties I had with Peter over various parts of my life. This loss leaves me transformed . I anticipate a sadness coming in waves. I know something is lost for me what I cannot fully fathom.

Thank you for being such an influential teacher of mine, Peter. The hours you spent with me, teaching about minimalism and stark contrast continue to inspire me. You were a good man.
