David Chamberlain Obituary

David Chamberlain, 83

Dr. David S Chamberlain of Vero Beach Florida, passed away on January 7th, 2015, surrounded by members of his family. David had been ill for some time, and was receiving hospice at Indian River Estates in Vero Beach. The funeral was held at St. Helen's Catholic Church in Vero Beach on January 19th with all his family in attendance.

David was born on February 10, 1931 in Boston, MA. He was the second oldest of three boys. He grew up in various towns in Massachusetts and attended Brown & Nichols prep school in Boston, where lettered in three sports including football, wrestling, and crew.

In 1952 David received his bachelor's degree in English at Dartmouth College. While at Dartmouth he participated in crew and was member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity. David was awarded a James B Reynolds scholarship for foreign study and enrolled at Oxford University in England.

On his way to Oxford by steamship, David met his future wife Ytsjelisck Witeveen who was returning to Friesland after an extended trip to American and Canada. After a two year courtship, David and Ytsjelisck were married in 1954. David also received his MA in English 1954.

Upon returning to the states, David enrolled in officer's training school, and served two years as a navigation officer during the Korean War. He flew naval air missions patrolling the DEW line along the eastern seaboard of the US.

After his military service, David began further graduate work at Princeton University and eventually received his Ph.D in Medieval Literature. In 1962, while still writing up his dissertation, David moved his young family to Iowa City to take a job as an assistant professor in the English Department at the University of Iowa. In 1975 David became a full professor of English at the University of Iowa. In 1997 he retired after a 38 year career of teaching and research into medieval literature.

David was a well loved professor who was well known for his teaching of Beowulf and other pieces of classic literature. He especially enjoyed teaching undergraduate students.

David and Ytsjelisck and their family attended Thomas Moore Catholic Church throughout their time in Iowa City.

David was active in Iowa politics, and was an accomplished carpenter, and handyman. David and Ytsjelisck raised six children in Iowa City and lived in six different Iowa City homes.

After retiring, David and Ytsjelisck moved to Florida, and eventually settled in Vero Beach. After a brief return to Iowa City, David and Ytsjelisck returned to Florida, and moved into the Indian River Retirement community in Vero Beach.

Mr. Chamberlain was a bright light in my studies at the U of Iowa. He gave me a lasting interest in and knowledge of Medieval culture and literature, which I used for years teaching high school. Being in his classes felt like being in my own home, where humor ruled all occasions and lesser known histories were common topics. I'm sorry your family has lost him. (U of I '64-'68)

One of the memories I cherish of grad school in the late '80s is working with Dr. Chamberlain -- his depth of knowledge, sense of humor, and love of his subject were remarkable. He was, as they say, a gentleman and a scholar.

My condolences to the Chamberlain family. I had Mr. Chamberlain for several classes while attending Iowa. I always enjoyed what he taught and how he taught it. My best memory of him was during a class on Chaucer and I had missed three classes in a row. When I finally returned, I still remember him peering down at me over his glasses as I walked in and commenting, "I haven't seen you in a while," I'm sure followed by my eyes widening. I've never forgotten him, so know that he impacted many in so many good ways. Peace to all of you.

Professor Chamberlain was wonderful. He opened the Medieval world to me.

I think "dyspeptic monks" got him to laugh first. He prepared me for graduate school Old English with Jon Wilcox.

Back in 87 I took a Medieval literature class with Professor Chamberblain On finals night - on Friday - I turned my final paper in - two days late. As I completed my blue essay book I heard him snort, and laugh and snort some more. My answers became more rote, less sardonic, less me. I turned in my essay book with trepidation, and he handed me my paper. An A Plus with the the Plus crossed out. Because I was late. He told me if I would be less equivocal about the Wife of Bath at the end and rework it I should submit it for the Medieval Writing prize. The next day he told me i had lost my humor at the end of my essays. I told him he had scared me by laughing at my paper, thinking my arguments were silly. He told me to never lose my sense of humor. That's what can make literary criticism fun. Professor Chamberlain was a great teacher and a funny man. I think of him every time I think of Medieval literature. I still have the green book he taught from.

I always enjoyed listening to Mr Chamberlain speak at the republican caucus. He would always start with his very distinguished "accent" "Chamberlain here, Johnson County" Austin, sorry for your loss.
