David Chamberlain

Mr. Chamberlain was a bright light in my studies at the U of Iowa. He gave me a lasting interest in and knowledge of Medieval culture and literature, which I used for years teaching high school. Being in his classes felt like being in my own home, where humor ruled all occasions and lesser known histories were common topics. I'm sorry your family has lost him. (U of I '64-'68)

One of the memories I cherish of grad school in the late '80s is working with Dr. Chamberlain -- his depth of knowledge, sense of humor, and love of his subject were remarkable. He was, as they say, a gentleman and a scholar.

My condolences to the Chamberlain family. I had Mr. Chamberlain for several classes while attending Iowa. I always enjoyed what he taught and how he taught it. My best memory of him was during a class on Chaucer and I had missed three classes in a row. When I finally returned, I still remember him peering down at me over his glasses as I walked in and commenting, "I haven't seen you in a while," I'm sure followed by my eyes widening. I've never forgotten him, so know that he impacted...

I think "dyspeptic monks" got him to laugh first. He prepared me for graduate school Old English with Jon Wilcox.

Back in 87 I took a Medieval literature class with Professor Chamberblain On finals night - on Friday - I turned my final paper in - two days late. As I completed my blue essay book I heard him snort, and laugh and snort some more. My answers became more rote, less sardonic, less me. I turned in my essay book with trepidation, and he handed me my paper. An A Plus with the the Plus crossed out. Because I was late. He told me if I would be less equivocal about the Wife of Bath at the end...

I always enjoyed listening to Mr Chamberlain speak at the republican caucus. He would always start with his very distinguished "accent" "Chamberlain here, Johnson County" Austin, sorry for your loss.

We so enjoyed having you as neighbor on Hutchinson. David was always such a cheerful fellow. Please accept our sympathy on the loss of such a fine husband, father and grandfather.
