Carl Levine Obituary

Levine, Carl S.

Carl S. Levine, 86, of Binghamton, formerly of Johnson City and Endicott, died peacefully at the home of his eldest daughter on October 3, 2016. He was the youngest son of Rubine and Nettie Levine, of blessed memory. He was predeceased by his brothers Leonard and Herbert. Carl is survived by his devoted daughters, Hollie Levine and her husband Brendan Byrnes, Debra Levine, Natalie Shatkin and her husband Marc, and Rochelle Levine Klieger. He is also survived by his former wife, Sharon Whitbeck. He was very proud of his seven loving grandchildren, Elana Levine, David and Rina Harosh, Leah and Aaron Shatkin, and Jacob and Hannah Klieger. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Elaine Levine, his nephews Richard (Jill) Levine and William (Birdie) Levine, and his niece Susan (Demetria) Levine and their families. Family and friends were very important to Carl. Carl was "lucky" to be born at Ideal Hospital, grew up in Endicott, and was proud of his local roots. He was a graduate of Union-Endicott High School, class of 1948, and Morrisville State College with a degree in clock and watch repair. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Carl was a Registered Jeweler and Certified Gemologist of the American Gemological Society. He began his jewelry career working with his father and brothers on the Avenue in Endicott. He was one of the "Sons" at Ruby & Sons, later serving as President from 1969-1995. Carl was active in many groups. He was a proud Boy Scout, Eagle Scout, and Sea Scout. He was a sixty-four year member of Round Hill Masonic Lodge #533 of Endicott. He served for many years as the treasurer of the West Lawn Cemetery. He was a congregant of the former Temple Beth El in Endicott and was a current member of both Temple Israel and Temple Concord, where he participated in the weekly Torah Study Group. Carl was a member of the Jewish Federation. Until the last month, Carl diligently worked out six days a week at the Jewish Community Center. Chief among his other travels, Carl was proud to have twice visited Israel. Carl spent summers for a quarter century at Spruce Row in Trumansburg, where he could be found sailing, attending cultural events, dancing to the sounds of Djug Django, sitting by the shores of Cayuga Lake, and enjoying his many Ithaca-area friends. Carl was a lifelong lover and supporter of the arts community in Broome County; he frequently and enthusiastically attended plays, operas, and concerts. Carl's passion for music was beautifully realized two weeks ago with an intimate chamber concert given for him by Pej Reitz, Steven Stalker, Timothy Perry, and Jeanne Sperber. Carl also loved to dance; he mastered all types of dance, and was a member of USA Dance Chapter 3011. Among his many dance partners was his good friend Santa Zweig. Carl was an avid supporter of the Binghamton University Bearcats Men's and Women's Basketball teams. He was happy to have been honored last season as a BU Basketball Superfan. Carl will be missed. He thoroughly enjoyed life; everywhere he went, Carl sprinkled his positive attitude and optimism--always looking at his world with a smile. The family would like to thank Carole Kelly and Sarah Otis and the wonderful workers of Lourdes Hospice for their help, their generosity, and their gentleness. The services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at Temple Concord, 9 Riverside Dr., Binghamton, with Rabbi Barbara Goldman-Wartell and Rabbi Rachel Esserman officiating. Burial will be at West Lawn Cemetery in Johnson City. The family will greet friends at Temple Concord on Wednesday from 11:30 AM until the time of the service at 1:00 PM. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Shiva will be observed at the Levine/Byrnes home at 71 Helen St. in Binghamton on Wednesday from 7:00-9:00 PM, Thursday 3:00-5:00PM and 7:00-9:00 PM, Friday 3:00-5:00 PM and Saturday 7:00-9:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Bednarsky Funeral Home, Inc.

Not sure what to say?

March 22, 2017

I never met Carl's family, although I often heard him talk about his daughters, and grandchildren; he always mentioned them. I met Carl about fourteen years ago when he started coming to hear Djug Django (a "Gypsy Swing" band) at Moosewood in Ithaca about the same time that I did. Over the years, I saw him many times at Djug Django events, but I'm sorry to say that I hadn't been going for a while, and did not hear the news of his passing until now. He was a very friendly and sweet gentleman, and I have two special memories of him I'd like to share.
Soon after I started going to hear Djug Django, I got up the nerve to stand up and sing with the band. My special number was "La Vie En Rose," which I sang in the original French. Carl always loved it when I sang that tune. He told me that he had a best friend in childhood whose last name was "Rose" and they liked to make the joke about "Levine 'n Rose" when that song was so popular in the 40's..
I also asked him to dance at one of the early Djug Django jams at Moosewood, when there was space for about three couples. He was a great dancer! I had done a little, but, with no lessons, really relied on a good partner. I danced with him whenever I danced at Djug Django, and usually, only him, one time! A few years ago, he told me that I was the first one to ask him to dance at those weekly jams, and he had been dancing at least once or twice each time since.
I ended up marrying one of the musicians in the band, and went a lot, and sang a lot with them in the early days. It was always a joy to see Carl in the audience. You were blessed to have such a wonderful father in your life, and my husband and I send our condolences.
With appreciation,
Susan and Brian Earle

I'm sorry for the loss to the family. Over half a century ago I was Carl's paper boy when he and his young family lived on the corner of Country Club Road in Endwell. I got in many conversations with him, and would stop by Ruby's to say hello. He asked me if I would be interested in babysitting their infant daughter, which I did several times which allowed Carl and his wife to go out to dinner. Great memories of a wonderful man.

To Carl's Daughters,

My husband, grandchildren and I had the pleasure of meeting Carl in September 2012 at Spruce Row. He came right over to our camp site, which was right across the street from ours, and introduced himself. It was an instant friendship from then on. Summers of 2013 and 2014 we spent 6 weeks at Spruce Row, right across the street from Carl. He spent many campfires with us, he accompanied us to many concerts and other events through out the summer. He loved our grandchildren, whom we have had custody of since 2008, and when they asked what they should call him, he said, well, since they are your parents, let me be your grandfather. He was Saaba to them. They loved him dearly as well. He would take them one or two at a time to different area free events. They loved their time with him! He kept in contact with us through the winters of 2012, 2013, 2014 and throughout the years of 2015 and 2016. Unfortunately, our 6 week camping trip in 2015 had to be cancelled as my husband became ill. My husband passed away on May 27, 2016. Carl was one of the first persons from Spruce Row to call me and offer his condolences. That meant a great deal to the children and I. We did go back to Spruce Row this summer without my husband and Carl and I spoke about that and he was hoping that he would be strong enough even to make it down for one day. We were so sorry that couldn't happen!

My deepest condolences to you and your families, he was a terrific person who made a huge impact in our lives. The children and I are heart broken by his death. We do believe that he is now out of pain and no longer suffering. We also believe he and Jeff have gotten together already. They were fast friends!

I have a couple of pictures that you may like to see, if so, please email me and I will send them on to you! [email protected]

Again, my sincerest condolences, you and your family are in our thoughts and daily prayers.

May your memories help you to find your new normal without your father.

Sincerely,
Carrie L. Fellows

My condolences to the family.
My memory of Carl is from Ruby Jewelry store. Back in 1959 while working part time at Wallace
Drug Store, a few doors down from Ruby's, I was
a frequent visitor to the jewelry shop. I purchased
several rings from Carl during those years. He was
always the perfect gentleman, and a great salesman. i have never forgotten him, and I still
wear those rings.
