Howard Whittemore Obituary

Whittemore, Howard E.

Falls Church, VA: Howard Earle Whittemore, born July 14, 1919, died December 22, 2011 in Falls Church, VA. Howard was born in Owego, NY to Anna (Morgan) Whittemore and L. Virgil (Virg) Whittemore. He attended school in Endicott, NY, graduating from Union-Endicott High School. Went on to attend Harpur College and graduated from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY. Upon graduation he joined the United States Army and proudly served as an officer during World War II, stationed in Great Britain, Italy, North Africa, and France. In France he served with the 92nd Evacuation Hospital. This was where he met Lucia Gardner of Springfield, IL (now deceased) serving with the Red Cross, who was to become his wife and lifelong companion. Upon discharge from active duty he served in the reserves for several years, being honorably discharged in 1950. He attended Rynard Funeral School in New York City, taking advantage of his GI Bill for Education, of which he was very proud. He worked for Allen and Allen Funeral Home in Endicott, NY but did not choose this for his life's work. Howard found employment with Underwood Typewriter Corporation, living in New York City, Boston, Massachusetts, and finally Washington, DC, where he and Lucia resided for the remainder of their lives. Leaving Underwood, he joined the National Capital Housing Project in Washington, DC, where he was employed as the Personnel Manager. He retired in 1985. He was a lifelong member of The Masonic Order, being raised in Friendship Lodge #153 F & AM, Owego, NY, and current member in Kemper-Macon Ware Lodge #64, Falls Church, VA. He will be interred with Lucia at the Family Cemetery in Springfield, IL. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Goodwin House Foundation, 3440 South Jefferson Street, Falls Church, VA.
