Peter Abashian Obituary

Peter Abashian, 83 of Jupiter, Florida and formerly of Vestal, died on January 19, 2011. He is survived by his six children: daughter, Roxanne Esaian (James Leahy) of Valley Stream, NY; daughter, Velvet Abashian (Marlene Phillips) of Lebanon, NJ; son, Paul Abashian (Adella Koenig) of Santa Cruz, CA; son, Peter M. Abashian (Bridget) of Madison, AL; daughter, Catherine Williams (Aleksey Tikhomirov) of Binghamton, NY and son, Daniel Abashian of Apalachin, NY. Also surviving are his seven grandchildren: Tiffany Esaian, Zari Esaian, Nathan Williams, Savannah Mattern, Peter C. Abashian, Gabrielle Abashian and Elizabeth Abashian. Additionally, Peter is survived by a brother, two sisters and a sister-in-law: Alexander Abashian of Ruckersville, VA; Rose Blackburn (Laurence) of Doylestown, PA; Violet Breckenridge of San Diego, CA and Joan Abashian, of Morrisville, NC. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, friends, son-in-law David Williams, and daughter-in-law Nancy Abashian. He was predeceased by his Armenian immigrant parents, Nishan and Isghouie Abashian, siblings Sarah Markarian, Laura Soghoian, and Steven Abashian; his wives: Helen (Donchuk) Abashian and Barbara (Abbott) Abashian. Peter was born on June 27, 1927 and raised in Binghamton where he was a faithful member of First Congregational Church for nearly fifty years. After graduating from Binghamton North High School, Peter enrolled at the Fort Schuyler Maritime Academy and was a proud "Scissorbill" and graduate of the class of 1947. He then joined the US Merchant Marine before enlisting in the United States Navy. He was a retired Lt. Cmdr. in the Naval Reserve and remained proud of his service and cherished the lifetime friendships he enjoyed with his fellow shipmates. He was the owner of Parkway Vending Services, a business he founded and successfully operated in the Southern Tier of NY for more than 32 years. He was an accomplished man who loved his family above all else. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name can be made to the Jupiter Medical Center Foundation, 1210 South Old Dixie Highway, Jupiter, FL 33458 or to Fort Schuyler Maritime Alumni Association, 236 Ernston Road, Parlin, NJ 08859. A memorial service will be held in Binghamton in the summer of 2011. Arrangements by National Cremation and Burial Society, Lake Worth, FL.

In the attached image is part 1 of my mother's memories of Dad. They did not get a chance to meet in person, still the two communicated regularly in writing and via Skype. Valentina admired Dad on so many levels and this is her tribute to him.

A very good and kind man has "Gone To the Great Maritime Academy In the Sky" as my Dad always said. I know he is with my Dad and many of the other members of the Class of '47. My Mom and I appreciated all the kindness he showed us after my Dad died and we will remember him and hold him in highest regard. May your memories help ease the pain. Pete Jr and the rest of the Abashian family,

Pete, I am not sure if you recall me, as I worked for your dad at Parkway Vending Service for only 18 months long ago in 1974 & 1975, but I believe you and I played basketball on the same GOYA team in a city league.

I want to convey my condolences to all of you at the loss of Pete Sr. PVS was my very first job ever and I learned a lot of the old school work ethic from him. To this day I relate to the vending machine people where I work Pete's rule that ALL snack machines have to have have peanuts and crackers in them (or else).

We were very sorry to hear about Peter's passing. We both worked at Parkway Vending for many years, and saw first hand what a hard worker he was. We have great memories of our time there and appreciate how kind he was to his employees ... treating them as an extended family. Because of that, we also knew Cathy, Peter, and Dan too. They learned by example that hard work is a virtue.

I am very sorry for your loss. I was in the Navy reserves with Pete in the 5o's. I got to know him in the reserves and after. I remember him as a very nice guy.I saw him many times in IBM working on his vending machines. He told me one time that he and his wife had to slit every pack of cigaretts and insert two cents because they cost 23 cents. I looked up his address in Florida and was going to visit him not too long ago. I wish very much that I had. We should all do and say things that we think about before its to late.
