Tom Head Obituary

Head, Tom

Tom Head died November 10, 2017. He was predeceased by his parents Joe & Venus Head and by his sister Betty Jo Rayl Bryant. Tom is survived by his wife Eileen Fay, his daughters Tawn & Hadassah, his sons Alan & Michael, and his four grandchildren Austin, Daemon, Luon & Prishtina. He was also predeceased by Tawn's son Chris. Tom had the extreme good fortune that his children chose wonderful spouses: Shawn Wood, Shprese Demiri, and Jeffrey Mativetsky.

Tom held professorships at Iowa State University, University of Alaska and Binghamton University. He is also survived by his seven PhD students each of whom he was very proud: E. Rutter, J. Delaney, J. Harrison, N. Jonoska, A. Weinberger, E. Goode, and J. Loftus. His life was brightened immensely by visits for lecturing as a guest in several nations. The longest visits being in The Netherlands, Japan, Spain and Malaysia. All his training was in pure mathematics (University of Oklahoma & University of Kansas) but his recognition was for the development of interactions between molecular biology and formal language theory. In 2002 Tom received the annually given 'Yellow Tulip' Award' for his early contribution to DNA computing. In 2004 he was presented with the 'Festschrift' volume of papers: 'Aspects of Biomolecular Computing'. In 2008 a conference at Binghamton University was held celebrating his75th birthday. Listening to the recorded music of Beethoven, Mahler, & Schoenberg and enjoying his family members kept him here on Earth through age 83.

Dear Eileen, Hadassah, and all the others of the family I did not have the pleasure to meet, please accept my profound condolences for the enormous loss. It is a big loss also for all people like me, who had the fortune to cross his life only for a while, and to enjoy his extreme mind and human kindness, his passion for art, life, movies, and science. Our numerous memories of him will keep him "alive" still for long time..

Dear Eileen,

I was very fortunate to have had off & on interactions with Tom H over many years dating back to the 70's when I was a graduate student @ UCD. I was glad to meet with the two of you a few years back in Binghamton.

I knew Prof. Head's name well before I came to Binghamton. He was the founder of DNA computing, and collaborated with one of my thesis committee members (Prof. Hagiya at U. Tokyo). It was my true honor meeting Prof. Head, having him participate in our CoCo seminars and discussing various ideas at the intersection of biology and computing. He has influenced the lives of so many. My sincerest condolences.

To my mentor and friend,

Thanks for teaching me that it is just as important to ask the right questions as it is to find the answers. I shall dearly miss your friendship, mentorship, and passion for truth. Thanks and Godspeed!

Thinking of your family as you go thru this loss of your father. What a kind soul he was. I had no idea he was sick.......but He may be gone but not forgotten and lives in our hearts forever. Thinking of your family today as I heard the news of his passing.

I remember as we lay on our backs alone in a dark room at Tom and Eileens home in Fairbanks listening to otherworldly music in a place beyond words.

Just this past summer, I asked Tom about why he stopped teaching math and he said that he could no longer find the words. So I asked could he still think Mathematics and he said yes.

He was a man who tapped into the world beyond words.

Rest In Peace, Tom
