Maria Zobniw Obituary

Maria K. Zobniw
"Mima"
July 21, 1948-April 3, 2009
Maria "Mima" Koropey Zobniw, age 60, passed away suddenly on April 3, a victim of a senseless act of violence. Maria is predeceased by parents, Malvina and Ostap Koropey; brother, Andrij Koropey; and uncle, Ivan Iwanejko. Maria is survived by her husband of 37 years, Lubomyr Zobniw; loving children, Dr. Zoriana Zobniw Nehrebeckyj (Yuri Nehrebeckyj), Dr. Adrian Zobniw, Oresta Zobniw Lisowsky (Dr. Taras Lisowsky), Chrystia Zobniw; brother, Orest Koropey and family; Godmother and aunt, Olha Iwanejko; sisters-in-law, Roma Chabursky and Irene Chabursky (Myron Chabursky); nephews, Roman, Zenon, Oleh, Orest, Lubomyr and their respective families; niece, Renata Romanchykevych and family. Maria was born in Landeck, Austria at a DP camp after WWII. At the age of 4, the family immigrated to the United States and walking through the gates of Ellis Island, the Koropey family started a new life in America. The Ukrainian village of Binghamton was located in the First Ward district. Here a strong Ukrainian community worked together to maintain their Ukrainian heritage and religious values while establishing themselves in this new country. Without the threat of persecution and with America's freedoms, the Koropey family was able to teach and maintain the fluency of Ukrainian language, religion, music, literature, history, and arts. These are the very same ideals which she continued to impart upon her own family and our growing community. Mima grew up within the Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church community and its organizations. First she attended Ukrainian school directed by Malvina Koropey and then carried on the role from her mother for 30 years to ensure her children knowing and growing within the Ukrainian heritage. Mima was an integral member of the church's committees and worked on marketing for fundraisers and activities. Mima was a member of Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization from her youth through adulthood. She was a scout camp counselor to many, ensured that the organization had a branch for this community, and most recently last summer the Zobniw family planned a weeklong Ukrainian family camp where over 30 families took part. For decades Mima has been President of the Binghamton Chapter Ukrainian Women's League and Secretary of the local branch of Ukrainian Congress Committee of America. In these roles she represented the Ukrainian culture and heritage through her and Lubomyr's weekend radio programs, organized Ukrainian independence day concerts and news conferences, organized educational booths for the Ethnic Festival and a Ukrainian library, and gave presentations at area schools about Ukrainian Easter Eggs, embroidery, and arts. Mima was always ready to share her Ukrainian heritage and time with those wanting to know more. Maria grew up in this Binghamton community attending the Catholic Schools of St. Cyril's and Methodius, and was a member of the first graduating class of Catholic Central. She achieved her Bachelors of Arts from SUNY Binghamton. To Mima, her family was her life. She put them before her own needs and nurtured them in a loving traditional Ukrainian Catholic environment. She persevered to ensure that all her children were fluent in Ukrainian, knew their heritage, and maintained and shared that identity. Her long marriage and children were her joy and identity, yet in her humble ways she never wanted to take credit for how hard she had worked to develop this life. Her steadfastness and support allowed her children to succeed in their endeavors. Mima will be missed dearly by all as her influence was literally felt world wide.
A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Laskowski Funeral Home and at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, Johnson City, where a Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by Rev. Teodor B. Czabala Jr. Burial will take place at the parish cemetery, Castle Creek. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ukrainian Women's League of America and Ukrainian Congress Committee of America--Ukrainian School Curriculum Fund, 203 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10003. Oresta,
Words cannot describe the emotions I feel today as I'm learning of your loss for the first time. Unfortunately, I was not lucky to have met your mother. Maria was obviously a strong, loving, and selfless woman. I want to send you and your family much love in this hard time.

Dear Zobniw Family,
It is with deepest sympathies that we extend to you at this time. Maria was such a special, sweet person with strong love & devotion of her family. We know Maria through our daughter Suzy who became fast friends with Chrystia in elementary school. We could always depend on Maria to transport the girls to dances, track events (anything they came up with that they "had" to go) and we knew she would take care of Suzy as she would her own. We will forever be connected to you through Chrystia and will forever keep Maria and you in our hearts. We all lost a very special person but she will never be forgotten. Peace be with you all. Love The Precopio Family

Oresta and Taras,
Although I never met your mother, it sounds like she was a wonderful person. When I heard of the violence, I first thought of our neighbors who have a summer home and family near Binghamton. Everything was well with them and it was another one of those senseless acts that no one can explain--like Columbine and unfortunately so many other incidents. I always think, I'm glad I don't know anyone who was there and how horrible it would be to lose a family member that way. I hope you can all find peace in time and remember all the wonderful times that your family spent together.

Zorianna and Zobniw Family

It is with great sadness to hear of your loss. I remember your mama from tabir days when the youngest Zobniw was still not part of camp running around having fun and your mom would run after her. She was always smiling and saying hello to all. Her work in the Ukrainian community will live on I am certain within all of her children. Please accept my deepest condolences and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

When my mother now deceased came to visit me from South Africa in 2002 I paid Marie two visits at the Civic Association. I discussed how much I wanted my daughter to grow up with the only living grandparent she would ever know. Marie was kind and a very good listener. Although I was unable to persuade my dearest mother to move to the USA, Marie was the first person I knew I had to talk to regarding this matter. I will miss her.

Dear Lubku, Zoriana, Orysiu, Adiu & Chrystiu,

The tragic news of Mima's untimely death was devastating to all of us in Connecticut who had the privilege of knowing her through PLAST, Soyuz Ukrainok, or the Children of Chornobyl Relief Fund. I will always remember her positive energy, her gracious hospitality, her selfless devotion to her family and her community, her willingness to help in any good cause, and to bring out the best in others without seeking credit for herself. Our one consolation rests in the knowledge that God has acquired a powerful new angel to carry out His Heavenly works. In the hard days to come, I'm sure that many will draw inspiration from her life and comfort from the beautiful light that she left to each of you. God grant her peace and light eternal.

Dear Lubko and Family,

I beleve that I am as shocked and bewildered by Mima's death as you must be. Although our families haven't been as close recently, I still remember Mima as I was growing up as a genuinely kindhearted and caring individual. Her enthusiasm was truely exceptional, and it appears she carried this through into both her personal and professional lives. Her desire and willingness to help others is reflected right up to her untimely death. She will be sadly missed by family, friends, and all those she touched in the community. Our most heartfelt condolences, and we will keep you and Mima in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Lubko and Family,

It was with extreme sadness and shock to learn of my childhood friend and neighbor's sudden tragic death. Mima and I grew up together. She lived one street over from us and her Mom taught us at Ukrainian School on saturdays. As many of us left Binghamton and the Ukrainian community, Mima remained, a constant teacher - teaching and instilling the love of one's heritage - and even to the end, helping those in need.

The Binghamton community has suffered a great loss and Mima will be missed -- Mother, Wife, Teacher, Friend...

Our deepest Sympathy to her Family and Friends.

Doroha Rodyno,

Please accept our deepest condolences. This is such a tragic loss for your entire family, Sacred Heart Church family, PLAST Rodyna, and the entire community. Your family with be in the hearts and prayers of many for a long time to come.

"Pani Mima" was truly a "Pani" in my eyes and such a fine example of what a Ukrainian-American mother could be with hard work, devotion, and determination. She raised kind children that are respectful, intelligent, sincere, and hard-working young people! Pani Mima ensured that her children spoke the Ukrainian language and that they learned about their rich culture and heritage. She was so dedicated and devoted to her family, to Sacred Heart Church, and to the entire community. She accomplished so very much, yet was so humble about it all -- that is what made her a "Pani" (truly, a lady).

Vichnaya Pamyat, Pani Mima...we will all miss you very much!!!

I remember Mrs. Zobniw well and the dedication she had to her family and community. I remember her presence at SCC engagements, graduations, and being a proud mother at Oresta and Taras's wedding.

My fondest memories are of picking up Oresta -- every single time, Mrs. Zobniw stuck her head out the door and uttered "return my daughter safely...and not too late." Zoriana,

I remember your mother coming in to help our class at St Stan's... always with your little sister in tow. I remember her as a kind and generous woman who loved and valued her family and Ukrainian heritage above all else.

I can't think of any words that could offer you comfort for the loss you're feeling, so please just know that you are all in my thoughts and in my prayers.

Love, strength and peace...

Lu, and family. I am very sorry I never met your wife and mother thru the years I worked with Lu, and very sorry for your loss. There is nothing I can say, other than to have faith that this is not the end, and Maria is with her God. My thought and prayers are with you.

To Zoriana & the Zobniw Family,

I wanted to express my deepest sympathy for you all at this extremely difficult time. In St. Stans, St. James and Seton with Zoriana, I remember Mrs. Zobniw as a wonderful and intelligent woman. She was always there for our class trips and class functions (I especially remember NYC in 1991). I know she will be deeply missed by her family. I'm sure you all have wonderful memories which will help to keep her spirit alive in all of you. God Bless.

With Love, Kelly (Maston) Pavlick
