Gladys Onstad Obituary

Gladie died peacefully at her home with family at her side on Wednesday, November 3, 2010. She was born to Ralph R. Tyler and Gladys Perry Tyler on April 21, 1922 in Alameda, California and raised in Oakland. She graduated in 1939 from Castlemont High School. In 1941, she married Bob Onstad and was with him over 67 years until his death in 2009. With Gladys's passing an era has come to an end. Her strong will, personality and caring made an indelible impression on all of those whose lives she touched. She had two children, Douglas (Phyllis) and David (Kathryn); and two grandchildren, Canada and Hal (Shannon). There were also two great grandchildren, Hailey Renee and Hal Douglas, who loved her very much. And a special thanks to Hal's wife Shannon for the extraordinary care, skill and compassion she brought to Gladie and the family during the final days. She contributed greatly to ensuring that Gladie's final days were as peaceful and meaningful as possible. Gladie lived life independently and on her own terms for the last couple of years despite losing her husband and being diagnosed with cancer. She was very close to her cousins, Janet Thiry (Mark), Joyce Carr (Greg), and Susie Medich (Dave) and their children, Krista and Ashley and Danielle and Jill. And during most of her life, her best friends were her sister Evelyn and aunt Billie Jane. They were truly three peas in a pod. On her husband's side (the Onstad side), she and Bob enjoyed long, rewarding and integral relationships with the numerous siblings and nieces and nephews. Bob and Gladie lived most of their lives in Castro Valley and relocated to Santa Rosa in 2002. Donations in Gladie's memory may be to made to Memorial Hospice, 821 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa, CA 95401, 707-568-1094. The burial will be at 12:00 noon, November 13, at the Calvary Cemetery, 2930 Bennett Valley Rd., Santa Rosa, CA. At 1:30 p.m., a memorial mass will be held at the Star of the Valley Catholic Church, 545 White Oak Drive, Santa Rosa, CA. A gathering will be held following the mass. Family and friends are invited to any and all of the above. DANIELS CHAPEL OF THE ROSES FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES 707-525-3730
