Phyllis Evangeline James

Phyllis James Obituary

Passed away in Sebastopol, CA on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at the age of 84. She was preceded in death in 1998 by Harold James, her husband of almost 50 years. Loving mother of Linda Christenson and her husband Randy Christenson of Santa Rosa. She was born in Modesto, CA and grew up in a variety of California cities; including Turlock, Pacific Grove, Eureka and Yuba City. She once counted 32 times that she had changed schools during her growing-up years. She and her husband lived in Guerneville for over 26 years, where they were active in their local church and a variety of community activities. Phyllis was a group leader in both Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls, the Sunday School Superintendent at her church, involved in the local PTA organizations, including El Molino High School, where she was a charter member, a member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary, and was elected in 1965 to serve as the Redwood area representative on the Sonoma County Board of Education. In 1975, her husband retired as Postmaster in Guerneville, and they moved to Santa Rosa where Phyllis continued her community involvement. She was a member of Redwood CB Radio Club and the Santa Rosa Quilt Guild. In 1990, the couple moved to Healdsburg, where Phyllis was active in the Healdsburg Senior Center and AARP. In more recent years, no longer driving, she especially looked forward to riding Healdsburg's Senior Bus to her various activities. For the past several years, she was a resident at Fircrest Care and Rehab Center in Sebastopol, where she considered many of the staff members her special friends. In her homemaking days, she could work wonders in the kitchen and was well known for her perfect piecrust and her often-requested potato salad. She was kind-hearted, a most gracious hostess who often had friends in her home, and always had a twinkle in her eye - loving a good joke. She will be deeply missed by family and friends. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral service, and interment will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Senior Center of Healdsburg, 133 Matheson Street, Healdsburg, CA 95448. DANIELS CHAPEL OF THE ROSES FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES 525-3730

Linda, I was saddened to read of your mother's passing. She and your dad were very gracious people. God bless you and your family during this difficult time.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Linda. We go way back to the Rio Nido days when your dad was the young postmaster in the little post office. I remember your folks dating, getting engaged and married. My sister, Bev, and I used to tease your dad when your folks were first dating by picking up the mail each day and saying, "Harold's got a girlfriend, Harold's got a girlfriend." Your mom was a wonderful person and I can remember her joyful personality to this day. You were blessed to have such great parents.
