David Franklin Obituary
Born on April 3 1921 in Victoria. B.C. Canada, David Franklin passed on Oct 29 at his home, which he shared with his partner of 25 years, Mary Mueller. He lived 89 years filled with many blessings. He had a multi-faceted path- the expression of a kind and genuine heart, intellect and constant curiosity. For a time he was a social worker and earned a Doctorate of Social work from the University of Southern California, in 1967.David was an ordained minister of the Healing Light Center Church, Glendale CA. He was widely known as a spiritual teacher and healer, teaching "Course in Miracles". He had enthusiasm for life and shared this exuberance with everyone he met right to the last day. David was a Renaissance man. In addition to his career, he studied classical guitar, built custom handcrafted furniture and loved the art of gardening. When he was the father of young children he created holiday surprises, such as magical landscapes of gumdrop figures and fabulous stockings filled with memorable treats. Throughout his life, David traveled around the world with his family and was especially interested in visits to historical, sacred places. David was in many ways ahead of his time; he listened to his own heart in matters of social conscience. He was a conscientious objector in World War II. In a recent interview, David revealed the basic building blocks for a successful life and acknowledged that his greatest teachers from an early age were his mother and Dr. Emma Smiley of the Victoria B.C. Truth Center. "Don't fight. Be kind to everyone, especially people with different values. Be kind to animals. Don't accentuate differences." A life-long learner, as well as teacher, David participated in the Santa Rosa Center for Positive Living, studied and practiced Buddhist meditation and was an enthusiastic member in the Yulupa Cohousing Community. David is survived by his partner Mary Mueller, his daughters Nomi Franklin and Kathryn Shoemaker, his grandsons Jordan Levy, Jett Levy and Andrew Shoemaker and a granddaughter Kristin Schmidt and great grandson William Schmidt. David shared his secret of vibrancy by these words: "We are not alone. Ask for help from the Holy Spirit. And know your answer will be forthcoming". Everyone whose life he touched will remember David's bright smile and loving kindness. Memorial is December 11 at 2 p.m. at Yulupa Cohousing in Santa Rosa, CA.
