Donald Frayer Obituary

Departed this life on November 19, 2010, peacefully and surrounded by his family, he was 81. Born in Pontiac MI, he was the son of the late Robert and Gertrude Frayer long time owners of Frayer`s Appliances in Pontiac MI. At the time of his death he resided in Sonoma, CA. where he was known to many as "Gramps", "The Hot Dog Man on Broadway", and "MacArthur". Don grew up during the depression in Pontiac and in his opinion nobody could of had a happier childhood or a better place to live. He loved to work even as a kid, shoveling driveways, raking leaves, sweeping the corner grocery store, stocking shelves, he took great pride always being able to find a job and doing that job well. He attended Pontiac High School were he played football and hooky, he was also a talented Golden Gloves Boxer. Don married his first and only love Shirley Reid after High School. They were married at The First Congregational Church of Pontiac where they remained members until their move to Sonoma. Don and Shirley soon started their family and he started the first of many businesses Butch`s Drive - In. His true calling came when working for his parents at the appliance store. It was apparent Don was a salesman. He was a regional sales rep for Crown Appliances and Pioneer Furniture. He owned Don Frayer`s Home Furnishings, Don Frayer`s Upholstery a business both his sons learned and carry on in their own shops. Don was the advertising sales director for the Pontiac Times newspaper. He worked for Kirby vacuums eventually becoming a regional sales manager. He started Savings Today coupon books with his brother Clarence in Florida and then moved with that and his wife Shirley to Sonoma 25 years ago. There were many sidelines along the way including training and managing amateur and professional boxers, a passion of his. Don also loved to cook and entertain, he was the life of any party. His last business Gramp`s Coney Island Hot Dogs brought him full circle back to Butch`s and hot dogs. He loved hanging on the corner, feeding and meeting the people of Sonoma. A stroke sidelined him 10 years ago but he never lost his great spirit and sense of humor. Don is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 62 years Shirley. He was the best of fathers to daughters Cathy Frayer of Sonoma, and Carol (Dave) Shemanski of Coeur d Alene ID., his sons Robert Frayer and his partner Gary Partridge, and John Frayer of Sonoma. Don will also be missed by his brothers Clarence (Susan) Frayer, Leon (Nancy) Frayer and sister Linda (Don) Fraser all of Sarasota FL. He was the loving grandfather of Michael (Jamie) Kassarjian, Jackie (Josh) Hill, Joe Shemanski and Mallory Frayer; and the great grandfather of Logan and Mason Kassarjian and Sophia and Michael Hill. Also his friend and caregiver Chand Kumar. Don leaves behind many friends, unforgettable stories and treasured memories filled with laughter and love and absolutely no regrets. Cremation has taken place by Duggans Mission Chapel and a gathering will be held at a later date. At this time of year and all through the year the family asks that you think of your neighbors in need and contribute what you can to Fish , Meals on Wheels or any local food bank.

My sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Don Frayer. I recall Don being a great friend of my late uncle Don Davidson. I'm pretty sure they grew up together in the city of Pontiac and I know that Mr. Frayer worked dilligently along with my uncle and several others to help make the city of Pontiac a great city again and a better place to live. Back in the late 60's and 70's, I often heard the name Don Frayer while at the dining room table at my grandmothers house when my uncle was over for dinner. He spoke highly of him and I knew then that this "Don Frayer" was some special guy. May God Bless the Frayer family and keep you all in his everlasting love and care.

I have so many great memories of Don...he was fun and sincere and enthusiastic. Those family gatherings (extended family...so many of us were in the Frayer embrace!) are treasured memories. And remembering Don's humor and general good will continues to remind me how good life is, as do you all. I'm so glad to know you, and hope you are doing well. I'll celebrate you all this Christmas, and sing a song for Don.
love, Ellen

Oh Carol, My heart was broken as I learned of your dad's death and read his lovely, heart-felt obituary. I can't find the words to express what he meant to me, us, and I share your sorrow at his passing. What a wonderful, crazy man he was, I always smile when I think of him and could add so many stories regarding his antics. I was thrilled to read that he died as he lived, surrounded by family. My heart aches for your mom who now must adjust to life without him by her side. What a love story they were, such a blessing to you all. Know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers, and that I will always remember him with a smile. Love,
Sharon

I first saw your Dad and Shirley at the Sonoma Hotel and watched him whirling his wife around the floor in what was called real dancing. Later in the year, I met Don and Shirley and had the good fortune to be included in their embrace.
Cathy, I am crying as I write but know how very special your care meant to him. And to the lying quilter.....howdy and you picked a good one.

Deepest love and affection,

What a beautifully written obituary. Just reading through it brings back a flood of memories and so many great stories about brother Don. He could light up a room just walking into it. I will always love and remember Don as the most loving, tender-hearted, generous, enthusiastic and fun loving brother a little sister could have. With love to all of you in Sonoma...

Reading of Don's passing in the Oakland Press and being a high school classmate brought back a lot of memories. I did not know him personally, but everyone knew of him. A truly great guy and a great American.

Don Frayer was a man who loved his family more than anything else in the world. He was proud every day of each and every one of his four children - and most especially of his wife Shirley. Being with the Frayer family has always meant being surrounded by love. I'm lucky to be able to be a part of that for these many years. I love you ALL, and will truly miss Dad.

Love, Sue
