Rita, Edgar was a great editor, fellow worker, and most of all a dear friend. We fought the battles of the Oakland Tribune together for many years, and in some ways we won. He not only was a Catholic and our monsignor, but he also was catholic -- the universal man. I have a feeling he is offering some suggestions to St. Francis now.

Dear Rita,
Edgar changed my life when he hired me on the copydesk 51years ago. We seemed to be the only two Catholics in the newsroom. He was the butt of good natured ribbing as
the "monsignor". I learned much about the church from Ed. We both had a seditious streak and shared a trip to Cal once to hear Hans Kung, whom we admired. I'll move Ed up on my prayer list where he's been for a long time.
