Hilary Hamburger Obituary

Hilary Hamburger, beloved mother, grandmother, daughter and sister, died peacefully on October 13th, 2010, at the age of 64, after a long courageous battle with lymphoma and two bouts of breast cancer in her 30's and 40's. Born in Chapel Hill, N.C. on May 25, 1946, to Robert N. and Sonia Hamburger, the family of three became five when they moved to New Haven, CT. Hilary spent her life as an extraordinarily dedicated and loving teacher, from infants to adults. Her first students were her two younger sisters, Debi and Lisa. Her family moved to La Jolla, CA. when she was in high school. She attended UC Riverside then moved to San Francisco where she received her Bachelor of Arts at SFSU. After teaching on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, her daughter Toya was born in 1975. In 1977 she returned to San Diego and taught at the daycare center at UCSD before moving to Santa Rosa in 1999 where she found a perfect fit in the warm community of Yulupa Co-Housing. Hilary was an avid reader, lover of movies, and travel, she shared countless meals, camping trips and parties with her good friends in her community. A leader in Non-Violent Communication, she conducted workshops seeking to better the world, beginning with herself. She is survived by her parents, Dr. Robert and Sonia Hamburger; her sister Lisa Hamburger (Tony Bila); her daughter Toya Holiday (Brandy); treasured granddaughters, Saylor and Jasper; and her daughter's father, Jerry Roybal. She is preceded in death by her sister Debra S. Hamburger. A Celebration of Life will be held at Santa Rosa Mortuary, 1520 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa on November 6th at 2:00 p.m. Donations to the American Cancer Society in Hilary's memory are appreciated. I am so sorry to hear about Hilary's passing. She was a dear friend and colleague of mine at the UCSD ECEC. I met her in 1983 and always admired her sincerity and positive attitude towards life. She had such a wonderful sense of humor; she would always find a way to make me laugh. She was so kind and had such a big heart for her students. She would go the extra mile and buy extra books and materials for the kids. She always wanted them to enjoy their time at school. Hilary's memory will always remain in my heart. My prayers go out to your family.
