Gilbert Johnson Obituary

Mr. Gilbert Lee Johnson Sr., 86, formerly of 713 Harrison St., Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell, Va.

He was born to Lee Andrew Johnson and Lillie Diggs Johnson on Sept. 8, 1924, in Dinwiddie County, Va. He attended barber school at Virginia State College (University) under the supervision of Mr. Cooper. He was a decorated veteran of World War II, having served on the beaches of Normandy, France. He was one of the original 17 members of Club 17.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, Harrison Street, Petersburg, Va., where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class.

He was preceded in death by his former wives, Jennie J. Harris and Doris Johnson; parents, Lee Andrew and Lillie D. Johnson.

He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He had a passion for life and will be missed by family and friends.

He leaves to cherish his memories, three sons, Milton L. Johnson and Gilbert L. Johnson Jr. of Petersburg, Va., and Brian A. Johnson (Helga) of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; one daughter, Marsha D. Johnson of Petersburg, Va.; six grandchildren, Marshall L. Walker, Monique K. Greene, Miles O. Johnson, Karen M. Johnson, Emmaly Johnson and Elliot Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Shikira Wynn, Jamyles K. Johnson and Autrelle M. Waddell; one niece, Joyce W. Myers (Ronald Sr.) of Bronx, N.Y.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A special thanks to the staff of Hopewell Health Care Center, Hopewell, Va., and all other care givers.

Funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at First Baptist Church, 236 Harrison St., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Jeremiah Tillman, pastor, eulogist. The interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at 929 Cool Spring Drive, Petersburg, Va., and may be contacted by calling 804-451-4334.

Milton and Family-you have my deepest sympathy. Your father allowed a lot of his young customers to call him Gilbert, but I had the utmost respect for him. Gilbert was our family barber for years when he shared the shop with Mr. Leonard Nelson and Mr. Morgan. It is too bad we couldn't have documented the fun, awareness and political discussions we cherished in there on Saturday mornings with him in the "Burg".

You have My Deepest Sympathy Milton and Family for Your Loss, Mr Johnson was our Family Barber when we were in our Youth and he was a close friend of My Father when they were member's of Club 17 and they were in that Upstair Building on Mars Street. Be Bless and Take Care,
