Mr. Hermanze Edwin Fauntleroy Jr., Herman, as affectionately known to his family and friends, peacefully departed this life on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va., at the age of 78. He was born on Aug. 7, 1932, in Petersburg, Va., to the late Hermanze E. and Helen C. Fauntleroy Sr.

He attended Petersburg Public Schools, graduating from Peabody High School in 1949. Herman continued his education at Virginia State College (now University) receiving his Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters in Education and Supervision. He later retired from the 80th Division of the 300th Support Group Reserve unit at Fort Lee as commander and decorated colonel, where he received the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious service.

Herman's professional career began as an educator in the Sussex County Public School System teaching physics and math at Sussex Central High School for one year. He then moved to the Petersburg Public School System where he taught electronics and physics at Peabody High School for 10 years. After losing his position at Peabody High School because of his election to the Petersburg City Council, Herman became a staff member at Virginia State College where he became the first development officer. Additional career opportunities included Seward Luggage, ownership of White Stores Electronics and Uni-Serv director of VEA for Southside VA.

Additionally, he served on the Board of the Virginia Council of Human Rights for Virginia from 1987–1989, appointed by then Gov. Gerald Baliles.

Throughout his life, Herman was a passionate civil rights activist and, along with his wife, was vital to the integration of Petersburg Public Schools in the late 1960s.

As a life-time member of Gillfield Baptist Church, Herman served as the first leader of the congregation for nine years and was a member of the Men's Choir.

Ms. Fauntleroy, I remember fondly how kind you and your husband were when we all attended an education convention in Toronto about 25 years ago. The two of you took me under your wing and invited me to join you for all of our activities. Such graciousness just underscored what I already knew about the two of you: You both were givers and willing to share. My mother and I, both retired teachers, remember him as a wonderful and tireless leader of the Southside UniServ unit. What a formidable force he was in various areas of the community! Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for your loss.

I am extremely saddened to hear of the loss of my Fraternity Brother, who was such a great Omega man. With my growing up in Petersburg as a child, he was truly a great example of what it meant to be a "Strong Black Man."

I would like to say to his family members - that pain you feel now - "shall pass," but the fond memories you will have of him will last with you for a lifetime.

My prayers are with you during this time of such a great loss to the family members, as well as to those around the country who call Petersburg, Va. home.

"May the family find comfort in knowing that Mr. Fauntleroy carried all of Petersburg on his shoulders. He accepted the sacrifices that "the old boy network" threw in front of him. We were blessed to have his leadership during that crucial time. Continue to speak his name and he'll always be with us." William "Doc" Harris-PHS-Class of '69 now living in (Immokalee, FL)

My condolences to the Fauntleroy family. He never told my father about me almost getting hit by a car on my bike. He was a great man who lived in a cute ginger bread house around the corner. Inside lived a wonderful wife and three beautiful daughters. I dont remember a cat or dog. (smile). May god continue to bless you.

My deepest condolences to the Fauntleroy family in the loss of your loved one Hermanze. Mr. Fauntleroy was a great man. Being the first Black mayor in the City of Petersburg and in the State of Virginia is only a small part of the impact he has extended to the people of Petersburg and surrounding area. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to benefit from his mentorship upon occasion. He was truely a great man.

To Germaine & Family: my deepest sympathy is extended to all of you. Wow!..38 years have passed since we were bowling partners. I didn't realize then as a young, naive military-about-to-be-teacher that I was in the company of such greatness! I enjoyed seeing Hermanze last when he served on the Scholarship Committee for the school system in 2007. He always made you feel special without exception... the mark of great leader. I am honored and privileged to have known him. You can take comfort in knowing what a tremendous legacy both personally and professionally the two of you built together. With fond regards, Ralph
