Dorothy Jones Obituary

On Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, in the quietness of the early morning hours, God fulfilled the destiny of our beloved Mrs. Dorothy Virginia Roney Jones, 93, of Petersburg. He carried her into eternal rest.

Dorothy was born Monday, March 12, 1917, in Dinwiddie County to the late Samuel and Beatrice Morgan Roney. She was preceded in death by mother, Marie Roney; two husbands, DeQuincy Adams and Edward Jones; son, Reginald Adams; daughter, Doris E. Henderson; four sisters, Inez Roney, Mary Lee Mason, Essie Mae Blackwell and Mildred Pegram; five brothers, William, Lawrence, Fenton, Booker T. and Phillip Roney; and grandson, Alfred "Peter" Roney.

She spent her 93 years as a daughter, sibling, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and servant of the Most High God. She gave not only her last but her very best. She served in the church wherever there was a need and fed every hungry mouth she could find. Our most cherished memory is that of answered prayers because she was a mighty prayer warrior. She always preached the message of love "you must love one another as Christ loved us because you can't live in this world without love and love is the greatest gift" — Dorothy Jones.

Those left to carry on her legacy includes: sons, Charles Adams of Troy, N.Y., Robert Jones (Joyce) and Leroy Jones of Springfield, Mass., and Floyd Jones (Delores) of Cleveland; daughters, Hattie Neal (Earl) and Emma Buchanan of Springfield, Mass., Vernell Roney of Dinwiddie and Macy Pride of Petersburg; son-in-law, William E. Henderson of DeWitt; two foster children, Robert and Wayne (Martha) Dabney of Petersburg; two sisters, Marcella Faulcon of DeWitt and Gloria Byrd of Petersburg; two brothers, John Thomas Roney of Petersburg and Floyd Roney (Nancy) of Richmond, Va.; three sisters-in-law, Beatrice Moore of Dinwiddie, Gwen Roney of Richmond and Rose Roney of New Jersey; three brothers-in-law, Jessie Blackwell of Dinwiddie, Dorsey Mason and Henry Pegram of Petersburg; four aunts, Ezlen Roney of Chesapeake, Doris Sydnor of Washington, D.C., Florence Whitmore of Philadelphia and Alfreda Wilson of New Jersey; 24 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren; ahost of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends, comprising of a number of devoted ones, and caregiver, Shanika Blackwell.

Public viewing will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at the McKenney Chapel, 11107 Doyle Blvd., McKenney, Va. A wake will also be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at the Petersburg Chapel, 530 S. Sycamore St., (804) 863-4411.

Northam, officiating and the Rev. Floyd "Butch" Jones eulogizing. Interment will be at Mount Level Baptist Church Cemetery, Dinwiddie, Va.
