Sherman Johnson Obituary

Sherman L. Johnson, of Petersburg, Va., departed this life Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at Southside Regional Medical Center after battling a long illness.

He was born Dec. 24, 1935, the son of the late Frances and Alfred F. Johnson.

He attended the Philadelphia Public Schools and graduated from West Philadelphia High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force.

Sherman always took on jobs that allowed him to be of service to others. He was employed with the Department of Probation and Parole, Philadelphia, director of the Philadelphia Department of Recreation's Family Camp, community arbitrator with the Department of Justice and an admissions counselor with the Berean Institute, Philadelphia.

He had a love for music. Many times he and his late brother, Alfred, would enjoy themselves listening to great jazz music, old and new, and he loved gospel music. Often, as was a family tradition, he would gather the family around the organ and lead everyone in joining in singing the old gospel favorites. Sherman loved family. He would come in a room with hugs and kisses for everyone in sight and was very generous with compliments and making everyone feel good about themselves. He also was a camera buff; always snapping pictures of everybody. He will be greatly missed.

He leaves to cherish his life, one sister, Emma J. Tolbert; one brother-in-law, Elder Lambert R. Tolbert; two daughters, Quawaii Katiwaii Pinkney and Tracey Johnson; one son, Jocquim Johnson; one daughter-in-law, Kim Mc-Clellan; grandchildren, Ishara Pinkney-Lee, Teya Pinkney-Johnson and Mayar Johnson; a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a very special friend, Lucille Rouse.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Tuckers Funeral Home with Elder David J. D. Tolbert officiating. Relatives and friends will assemble at the residence of Elder and Mrs. Lambert Tolbert, 1501 Valor Drive, Petersburg, at 2 p.m. Services under the direction of Tuckers Funeral Home, 415 Halifax St., Petersburg.

My very sincere condolences. I've witnessed firsthand the strength of your family. I can honestly say I'm taken back by Sherman's departure. I always expected endurance even though I witnessed the struggle. I want you to know the last real conversation we had was encouraging and spiritual and he witnessd to me. Much love..
