Larry Wilkes Obituary

Larry Richard Wilkes, 60, of DeWitt, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at Retreat Hospital in Richmond, Va.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Slaughter Wilkes; a son, Jonathan, and a daughter Robin; sisters, Patsy Ericson and Sue Proctor; brothers, Douglas and Robert Wilkes.

Larry served six years in the 82nd Airborne Division. He spent many years as a carpenter and truck driver. Larry had a gift with gardening and building birdhouses and log cabins. Animals of all kind had a special place in his heart. He will be dearly missed. A celebration of Larry's life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to your local SPCA, or to Hospice of Virginia, 7231 Forest Ave., Suite 100, Richmond, VA 23226. Arrangements by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.

Brenda, I will miss Larry's strength and courage in this world. I mostly knew him as a customer when I had my little greenhouse business. He encouraged me to keep at it. When he came to shop, somehow the whole day went better after his visit.
