Barbara Harris Obituary

Mrs. Barbara M. Harris, of 20109 Matoaca Road, Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at Golden Life Living Facility in Petersburg, Va.

She was born on Feb. 27, 1938, in Petersburg, Va., to Zebulum and Lucille Cooley Mountcastle. She was educated in the Chesterfield County Public School System and graduated from Carver High School. She furthered her education at Virginia State College, now Virginia State University, majoring in elementary education. She taught for several years in the Nottoway County School system and later moved and retired from Ettrick Elementary in Chesterfield County.

She confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church in Chesterfield County, Va. She later joined Union Grove Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess, church clerk, and was a staple in Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She was also a member of the Deacons and Deaconess Union of Chesterfield County, and a former member of Alease Cooley Memorial Tent #718.

She leaves to cherish her memories a devoted husband of 40 years, Garland "Jack" T. Harris Jr.; one daughter, Tracey N. Harris of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Shirley Collins (Lawrence) of Philadelphia; one uncle, Andrew Cooley of Chesterfield, Va.; one aunt, Mary Cooley of Colonial Heights, Va.; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Williams; six brothers-in-law, Willie M. Harris (Jacqueline), Edward Harris, Charles Harris (Delores), Timothy Harris (Joyce), all of Chesterfield County, Va., Leon Harris (Barbara) and Tony Harris of Reading, Pa.; two devoted cousins, Joyce Cosby and Jean Miles of Chesterfield County, Va.; a devoted caretaker, Mary Sellers of Matoaca, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Special thanks toDorothy Williams, Jacqueline Harris, the staff of Golden Life Living Center, especially Rachel Hill and "Ms. Inez," and the staff of Henrico Doctors Hospital.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at Union Grove Baptist Church, 19111 Church Road, Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Joe Reeves, pastor, officiating. Interment to follow at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at 20109 Matoaca Road, Ettrick, Va., and may be contacted by calling (804) 590-2836.

Dear Children & Grandchildren, God has removed Mrs. Barbara from our lives physically, but we will always have her warm smile, her big heart, and loving memories. God will even allow us to feel her presence sometimes. Just remember how much she loved you all! Treasure her memories, Stay close to God and each other!
