Henry Hardenbergh Obituary

Henry Hall Hardenbergh III, of Prince George, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1943, in Richmond, Va., son of the late Henry Hall Hardenbergh Jr. and Cornelia Spratley Land Hardenbergh. Hall graduated from The College of William and Mary, where he majored in history. He was a member of Grace Anglican Church in Purdy. Hall was a lay reader, active in the Epiphany Ministries and had served on the vestry at Christ Church in Waverly. He had a love for antiques and historic homes, and also served on the board of Historic Petersburg Foundation. Hall was a Christian gentleman of generous compassion, a joyful pilgrim with a twinkle in his eye and a hint of humor and adventure in his voice. His well-informed interest in 18th- and 19th-century architectural styles and antiques was notable. He will be remembered as the welcoming squire of Orchard Hall in Prince George County who hosted a large circle of remarkable friends from all over the world. His loyal devotion in the service of "all sorts and conditions of persons" is his finest memorial. He was a humane man and a loving father and husband.

Hall is survived by his loving wife, Frances Batte Hardenbergh; son, Charles VanEvera Hardenbergh and wife, Mari; uncle, Brand Hardenbergh and wife, Lafayette; brother, Carter Land Hardenbergh and wife, Melissa, and family; sister-in-law, Lucinda Straw and husband, Doug; brother-in-law, Robert Bolling Batte IV and wife, Anne; nephew, William Meuse and his daughter, Jasmine; as well as numerous cousins.

The family will receive friends at the Purviance Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Wakefield from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at Grace Anglican Church, 9945 Purdy Road, Jarratt, with the Rev. Colin C. Cooper officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Anglican Church, 11254 Purdy Road, Jarratt, VA 23867, attn: Melissa Forsythe, or to the Reach Out Center, 22 W. Washington St., Petersburg, VA 23803. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com.

I was very saddened to hear recently of Hall's death. My deepest sympathy to Frances and Van. Hall was larger than life, with a great sense of humor, and possessed a helpful nature. Although I had not seen him in many years, I shall miss him.

"Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints." Ps 116. Hall has ARRIVED!

"Blessed are the dead which die in the LORD, yea, from henceforth, for they do rest from their labors, and their works do follow after them."

Sorrow, yes; I'll miss you. Right now I hope it's a long time before I see you again, but bless God, thank you Jesus, we'll rejoice together again.

See you brother.

Frances & Van,

We are very sorry to hear about the loss of Paul.

Simply put, he was such a fine fellow. It was always a pleasure to see Paul cutting through a crowd to greet you with his million dollar smile. What a guy and all of us were better for knowing him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
