John Lopinsky Obituary

John Stanley Lopinsky, age 91, of Colonial Heights, Va., passed away on Friday, Aug. 27, 2010.

He was born in Cranberry, W.Va., the son of the late Stanislaus and Victoria Karandyszewski Lopinsky. Mr. Lopinsky was also preceded in death by his wife, Flo, and son, Stanley. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II with the 12th Signal Platoon at Hickam Field, Hawaii; with the 484th Bomber Squadron stationed in Italy. Mr. Lopinsky was a member of VFW Post 622, and a lifetime member of the Pearl Harbors Survivors Association, of which he served locally as a past officer. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Petersburg. He was an avid sports fan — enjoying all sports, especially baseball. Mr. Lopinsky was retired from civil service, ending his career as a commissary specialist at Fort Lee.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Norma J. Lonnemann and husband, Richard, of Dinwiddie, Va.; grandsons, Matthew R. and wife, Kellie, Mark A., and John B. and wife, Cameron; great-grandchildren, Rylee, Paige and Noah Lonnemann; and multiple loving nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A Christian wake service will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, followed by visitation until 8 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will follow at the church at 11 a.m. on Friday, with interment afterwards in St. Joseph Cemetery, Petersburg. "old soldiers never die, they just fade away". I have not seen John for years. But the memories I have of John working with the Southeast Commissary Region, U.S. Army Troop Support Agency, will live within me forever. I will always remember the fun our office had with John. The playing of cards at Lunchtime was a time of such enjoyment and John loved it everyday. What great memories I have of John and all the Operations Division personnel there. I pray now and thank God for knowing John and what impact he had on our civilian and military workforce. May God Bless John and give him rest. And, God Bless the Lopinsky family.
