Monte Norton Obituary

Monte G. Norton Sr., 62, of Amelia, formerly of Chesterfield County, lost his two-year battle with merkel cell carcinoma on July 1, 2008, surrounded by his devoted wife and family. He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Norton of North Dakota.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Toni B Norton; son, Monte G Norton Jr. of Richmond; his mother, Emma Peterson and stepfather, Robert Peterson; sister, Sandra Sande (Dean); brother, Dwight Peterson; stepson, Daniel Evans (Rebecca); stepdaughter, Amber D'Amelio (Dave); four loving grandchildren, Haley D'Amelio, Emilyne Evans, Tyler D'Amelio and Andrew Evans; half-brothers, Rocky, Lance and Bradley Norton; numerous nieces and nephews; the extended family of his wife; and many supportive friends and neighbors.

Monte received his master's in engineering from Texas A&M in 1972 and proudly spent his entire career in support of his country as a federal employee. He enjoyed travel and did so extensively; visiting many countries around the world. Monte was a member in good standing with Professional Engineering Societies and many information technology organizations. He retired in January of 2007 shortly after learning of his illness. Monte shared a passion for showdogs (golden retrievers) with his wife. Over the past 20 years Monte used his analytical skills in studying the genetics of dogs and helped his wife plan breedings to produce offspring that were healthy with solid temperaments and the capability to win their AKC Championships in the showring. During his last few years, he devoted his time to having his dream home constructed in Amelia with Frankie Williamson (builder) and moved there with his wife in November of 2007. He possessed an amazing gift for developing friendships that lasted decades; and enjoyed his role of husband, father, friend, 'gentleman farmer,' information technology expert and, most importantly, the role of grandfather.

Monte requested there be no funeral or memorial service, so his family and friends are invited to a 'Celebration of his Life' at his home in Amelia at 2 p.m. July 13. For details and directions, please e-mail his wife at [email protected].
