Clifford Felder Obituary

FELDER, DR. CLIFFORD E. (CHAIM TZVI) 59, died after a brief illness in Rehovot, Israel where he has lived since 1981. He was a Research Associate in Theoretical Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Weizmann Institute of Science. Dr. Felder, born in Fall River, MA. was an honors graduate of Duke University, received an MS from Brandeis University and a PhD in Theoretical Biochemistry from Iowa State University. At Weizmann, Dr. Felder has been an integral member of two teams of scientists exploring the molecular modeling of proteins, drugs and other organic/organometallic Compounds. Among his numerous publications and accomplishments, he wrote a server that calculates dipole moments of proteins. In addition to many accomplishments, Dr. Felder faced challenges in his life with a special sweetness and strength that inspired many. He enjoyed playing the piano for his family and friends. He was devoted member of his Religious community where he participated in daily study of Torah and lived his life in fulfillment of its highest ideals. On his Web page http://www. weizmann.ac.il/home/joel/group/ csfelder/felder.html, he quotes from Psalm 104, Verse 24: "How great are Thy works, Oh L-rd, with wisdom Thou hast created them all, the world is full of Thy creations." Through studying the wonders of His Creation, we come to better understand the greatness of the Creator Himself, may He be Blessed. He was the son of Louise Felder currently of Providence, RI and the late David E. Felder. He is also survived by his brother Fred of Providence, RI, and his brother Lloyd and his sister-in-law Deborah of Dartmouth, MA. He is also survived by his niece Laura, a medical student at Georgetown, and his nephew Daniel, a financial analyst in NYC. Dr. Felder was interred in Israel on January 2, 2013. On behalf my colleagues from the Czech Academy of Sciences, I would like to express our gratitude for the scientific work that has been done by Dr. Felder and his coauthors. We consider his work on electrostatic properties of proteins to be of particular importance for our further research. We were very sorry to learn that Dr. Felder passed away few years ago. Nevertheless, the legacy of his scientific work will stay here forever since other scientists will build upon it to keep discovering mysteries of this world with hope for a progress of mankind.

My husband and I learned of Clifford's passing in the Duke Alumni Journal. We were all members of Hillel during our college years. Clifford would always be at services every Friday night like clockwork. Although we lost contact with him after graduation, it was wonderful to learn about Clifford's accomplishments and emigration to Israel. In spite of this challenges, Clifford was able to find a place for himself in the community. His work will live on to benefit his fellow man. He was a gentleman and a scholar. We are so sorry for your loss.

Clifford was a classmate of mine at Duke University. I'm edified to see him looking so well, and so confident. He clearly overcame some handicaps since the time I knew him from Pegram House. I am proud of Clifford, then, of the love he created and his professional accomplishments. Rest in peace, chaver.

I was privileged to be Clifford's major professor during his doctoral research at Iowa State University. He was an exceptionally brilliant student. It was a delight to see his progress through difficult problems. I learned a great deal from mathematical methods he developed, and have continued to use some of them. Personally, Clifford was patient, kind, unselfish, and outgoing. He was often a guest in our home, and our five young children got to know him well. I am most gratified to learn, from the many comments from others who knew him, that he was so well liked and respected at the Weizmann Institute and the Rehovot community.

Thirty days of mourning for Clifford (Chaim Tsvi) is concluding. The loss is still so fresh. We pray his sudden passing precluded prolong suffering. We grieve for the words never spoken; the slow acceptance that our future lives in memory. His accomplishments inspire reflection: accomplishment overcomes adversity, love conquers challenges, and destiny is never obvious. We are proud that Clifford loved us without judgment.

We've known Chaim Zvi for close to 30 years and he was a frequent visitor in our house, often coming for a meal on Shabbat and at least one meal on each Yom Tov. You could say he was almost part of the family. He watched our children grow up, talked and played with them and, in recent years, also with our grandchildren who always asked when they came for Shabbat - Is Chaim Zvi coming as well? He was a great inspiration to us and will be sorely missed.

Chaim Tzvi (Clifford) had a profound affect on me. Even the brief period during which I knew him showed me his love of life and fellow human beings. He will forever be in the hearts of the Chatam community and Rehovot, Israel. May his family be comforted amongst the mourners, and may his memory always be a blessing.

The admiration and affection with which Clifford was held was evinced by the huge funeral attended by dozens of his friends and colleages from the Weizman Institute and his many friends from the religious community in Rehovot, as well as friends and relatives from all over Israel. The many speakers discussed his honesty, his brilliance and the amazing way in which he had overcome handicaps. He was an example to so mcny people. May his memory be for a blessing, and may his family know no more sorrow.

Chaim Tzvi z"l was one of the humblest people I have ever known. He didn't speak of his accomplishments, but he really was a genius. He was also a great guest of ours and the kids loved him.
He was so distinct. He shook hands with both hands and made a person feel important. With his exuberance he seemed nothing like 59. He will really be missed by our community in Rechovot.

I've known Clifford for several years and as his picture shows, he always had a smile on his face. It was a privilege to have known him. May the family know of no more sorrow.

My memories of Clifford are numerous and beautiful. He was sensitive, warm and spiritual in every way. It is a privilege to have been, at least for some time, his rabbi and his friend.
