Dr. Clifford Felder

On behalf my colleagues from the Czech Academy of Sciences, I would like to express our gratitude for the scientific work that has been done by Dr. Felder and his coauthors. We consider his work on electrostatic properties of proteins to be of particular importance for our further research. We were very sorry to learn that Dr. Felder passed away few years ago. My husband and I learned of Clifford's passing in the Duke Alumni Journal. We were all members of Hillel during our college years. Clifford would always be at services every Friday night like clockwork. Although we lost contact with him after graduation, it was wonderful to learn about Clifford's accomplishments and emigration to Israel. Clifford was a classmate of mine at Duke University. I'm edified to see him looking so well, and so confident. He clearly overcame some handicaps since the time I knew him from Pegram House. I am proud of Clifford, then, of the love he created and his professional accomplishments. Rest in peace, chaver.

I was privileged to be Clifford's major professor during his doctoral research at Iowa State University. He was an exceptionally brilliant student. It was a delight to see his progress through difficult problems. I learned a great deal from mathematical methods he developed, and have continued to use some of them. Thirty days of mourning for Clifford (Chaim Tsvi) is concluding. The loss is still so fresh. We pray his sudden passing precluded prolong suffering. We grieve for the words never spoken; the slow acceptance that our future lives in memory. His accomplishments inspire reflection: accomplishment overcomes adversity, love conquers challenges, and destiny is never obvious. We are proud that Clifford loved us without judgment.

We've known Chaim Zvi for close to 30 years and he was a frequent visitor in our house, often coming for a meal on Shabbat and at least one meal on each Yom Tov. You could say he was almost part of the family. He watched our children grow up, talked and played with them and, in recent years, also with our grandchildren who always asked when they came for Shabbat - Is Chaim Zvi coming as well? He was a great inspiration to us and will be sorely missed.

Chaim Tzvi (Clifford) had a profound affect on me. Even the brief period during which I knew him showed me his love of life and fellow human beings. He will forever be in the hearts of the Chatam community and Rehovot, Israel. May his family be comforted amongst the mourners, and may his memory always be a blessing.

The admiration and affection with which Clifford was held was evinced by the huge funeral attended by dozens of his friends and colleages from the Weizman Institute and his many friends from the religious community in Rehovot, as well as friends and relatives from all over Israel.The many speakers discussed his honesty, his brilliance and the amazing way in which he had overcome handicaps.
