Gerald Bitner Obituary

Gerald N. "Gus" Bitner, 86, passed away March 29, 2010 at the Chambersburg Hospital. He was born July 23, 1923 in Chambersburg, the son of the late Jacob and Etta (Swope) Bitner. "Gus" was a member of the Second Lutheran Church, the Charles Nitterhouse Post #1599 V.F.W., Burt J. Asper Post #46 American Legion, Hume McNeal Byers Post # 224 Amvets and the Landis-McCleaf Detachment Marine Corps League.

An engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad for most of his life, he also served his country as a member of the US Navy during WWII. "Gus" was an avid golfer, but also enjoyed bowling, fishing and playing cards. He married his high school sweetheart, Helen "Grets" Monn on March 16, 1946 and they shared 64 wonderful years together.

He is survived by his wife Helen "Grets" (Monn) Bitner, one son: G. Michael "Mike" Bitner, one grandson: Jason "Jake" Bitner, all of Chambersburg, a daughter-in-law Faye Bitner of Ridgeway, PA and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Gregory Parker Bitner.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at the Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home with the Rev. Henry Johnson officiating. Military honors by the Charles Nitterhouse Post #1599 V.F.W. will be held at 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Charles Nitterhouse Post #1599 V.F.W. 747 South Fourth St., Chambersburg, PA 17201 and the Martinsburg VA Medical Center, 510 Butler Avenue, Martinsburg, WV 25405.

My wife and I are very sorry to hear of your loss. Guss was a wonderful neighbor. I"m sure he is in a better place now. Very sorry that we won"t be able to attend the services as you know we are still in Fla.
