Byrd Stoudt Obituary

Byrd J. Stoudt Byrd James Stoudt, 83, of Scotland, PA, died Monday evening, March 30, 2015 at Chambersburg Hospital, surrounded by family. Byrd, known in his life as "BJ" Stoudt, was born on April 27, 1931 to Charles Stoudt and Hilda Henninger Stoudt in Strausstown. BJ grew up in Strausstown and went to elementary school with Dawn Evans Anthony, who would later become his wife and life partner on November 25, 1957. BJ grew to be a talented athlete during High School and while attending East Stroudsburg College, where he played on the National Championship Soccer team and the varsity Baseball team. BJ was recruited by the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Organization, and was known as a left-handed slugger. Later, BJ continued his baseball career with a successful stint in the County Leagues earning many batting titles. BJ played on the professional baseball circuit for 3 years before returning to East Stroudsburg to finish his degree in Physical Education and marry his wife, Dawn. BJ and Dawn have two children, eldest Elizabeth S. Rahauser, married to Charles F. Rahauser, of Chambersburg and James Anthony Stoudt, married to Helen "Dee" Stoudt, of Camp Hill. BJ has two beloved grandchildren, Elizabeth E. Rahauser, of Wheeling, WV and Charles A. Rahauser, of Charlotte, NC (known as "Beth" and "Chas"), who were the light of BJ's life. BJ spent many years as a teacher and Department Head at Chambersburg Area School District and during those years, BJ also earned a Master's Degree at Temple University. Upon leaving his educational career, BJ dedicated himself to his passion for antiques where he was known for his expertise in the genre of early primitive Americana. BJ's favorite pass times included fishing trips to Montana and Canada and studying Native American History, which led him to co-develop a screen play based on a post Civil War Captain's diary from the surrounding area. Services for BJ will be held in Chambersburg at St. John's United Church of Christ, 1811 Lincoln Way East on Friday, April 3rd, 2015. The family will welcome visitors at 8:30 AM with a Memorial Service at 9:30 AM. Immediately following the service, family and friends will travel to Zion Blue Mountain United Church of Christ, 6573 Old Route 22 Strausstown, PA for a visitation at 1:30 PM followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 PM. The interment of the body will immediately follow at graveside. To honor BJ's great love of animals in need, donations will gladly be accepted at Greener Pastures No Kill Animal Rescue P O Box 278 Marion, PA 17235. On line condolences may be expressed at

Byrd Stoudt was one of a kind. I deeply appreciated his unique sense of humor, his compassion, and his sincere friendship.
I recall attending many wonderful events at the home of Byrd and Dawn. Their hospitality was so appreciated.

Byrd, Dawn and I shared many wonderful years teaching at Faust.
I was out of town and could not attend services, which I regret, but I heard many comments about how beautiful the service was.
He leaves a wonderful family. I wish the family peace. I will miss Byrd.

Dawn, One of my Strausstown playground teachers. I am sorry to hear of Byrd's death. I was a "foul ball chaser" at weekend ball games at Strausstown. Since BJ played for Bethel, one of my regrets from those days is that I did not get to see him hit more balls into the corn field. Deepest Regrets to you and your family, Allen Lesher

My Sympathy to you and your family. Always enjoyed Byrd at Auctions. He used to tease me a bit but always knew it as just that. Will miss him coming in and out there...

BJ and his lovely wife taught me so much about life as they lead by example. I was lucky to have met BJ after my dad died and he took me under his wing and shared his wisdom, compassion, his beautiful family, and perfect hospitality with me and my dear mom. He was always there to lead an ear, give a caring word, and he understood what it meant to be a true friend and gentleman in every sense of the word.
His wife and my mom were both former home economics teachers and we all shared a love for good food, wine, antiques, history, current events, animals, family, Penn State, Florida, and just about everything! We had some great laughs together and not a holiday would pass without a festive gathering.
BJ spoke so lovingly about his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family, former students, and many friends. He was so proud of each and every one!!! When my mom passed, BJ and his family were there for me, holding me up in so many ways. BJ had such a caring heart and he changed my life by just knowing that there are people in this world who actually do make a difference. Byrd Stoudt made a difference. RIP dear friend....thank you for everything...I will always miss you. You were larger than life!

I had Mr Stoudt for 11th grade health, he was one of my most favorite teachers at CASHS. I Remember the day I quit school and went into his class to tell him and return my books, he literally chased me around the class trying to talk me out of it. I should have listened to him. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends he will never be forgotten. God Bless You All.

Such a kind and gracious gentleman. I only met Byrd once, but he truly made an outstanding impression on me. He and his wife Dawn devoted much of their time to helping others. Indeed the world would be a finer place to live in if there were more people like them!
